Attitudes!!!

My 6 year old constantly argues with me or has an attitude. She thinks she knows everything!! So far I've taken away all of her toys indefinitely and she misses tv and friend time after 2 comments. However, it does not appear to be getting any better. All of her sitters and teachers think she is the best behaved little girl ever, but she's a little monster with me!! Am I making too much of this? Should I just call it a phase and just wait for it to pass?

What can I do next?

My almost 5 year old is the same way. Everything is argued about, from what she's going to wear to why she can't do something. I think that it's just part of being their age to be honest. A lot of the time I'll say "end of discussion" and refuse to say another word about it. Also, something that seems to be working lately is when she argues or asks the same question repeatedly I'll say "I already answered that. Did you not hear me?" Then, she tends to drop it. I try to keep in mind that if I take part in the arguing, then I'm "arguing with a 5 year old" which is absurd when you really think about it. It really does help if you refuse to argue with her. Either tell her that you gave your answer, end of discussion, whatever it takes, but if you sit there and argue with her, she'll continue arguing more and more if she's anything like my daughter. Girls are fun fun fun, aren't they???? I keep telling my neighbor who has a 2 year old that always argues with her until she gets her way that she is in for some big trouble if she keeps giving in to her. She has no idea!!!!

It sounds like you're doing a good job with consistency and negative consequences. I think her response to you shows that she feels like you are her "safe haven" and can act out without fear of rejection. She is in a huge developmental stage, and she has to work her way through it. If you continue to be consistent and loving, she will eventually make her way through that phase. The other advice given was great, too. When she is talking back, just remember to keep at it. . . :)

Hi,
my name is robin and i dont have an answer for you but i wanted to say that you are not alone and its nice that im not alone. I was beginning to think i had done something wrong. Whats is ironic though is my daughter is 7. I have had an absolute awful time with her and i am at my wits end. She is very mouthy and constantly angry. So i came across this support group and though i would seek advice. Your comment is the first one that popped up in front of me and is was a nice feeling. Thanks robin

I have a 5 year old and a 7 year old, both girls and both have attitude. I am a stay at home mom and I homeschool them so it is a double wammy, because I am their mom and their teacher. We started a system that seems to be working at the moment. I went to Walmart and got little glass bowls and glass beads in the craft department. I let them pick out some stickers to decorate them and we started giving beads/marbles for good behavior and getting ready for bed on time, etc. and taking beads/marbles away when the behave badly, whether it be fighting with each other or my husband and I. Then when they get 10 marbles I put a tally mark on the board they each have their own tallies. When they get to 10 tally marks together we go somewhere or do something fun, such as Chuckie Cheese or something like that. I try to make it something we do together as a family and not matieral things such as buying them something. Anyway that's my two cents, I hope this helps a little. The one thing I notice is that my 7 year old has more attitude and I blame myself because she is just like me and that's why we but heads so much, God help me when she starts her menstral cycle. LOL!!

My 6 year old daughter is the same way. Isn't it a pain? She constantly complains about anything and everything. She argues about everything and makes up excuses like there is no tomorrow. We were out at the fireworks last night and you should have heard her when we were looking for parking and trying to leave in all the traffic. You would have thought she was a disgruntled old woman! Anyway, it is comforting knowing its not just her. Hopefully its a phase! Good Luck!

I am in a similar problem with my 6 yr old daughter. She is completely obnoxious and disrespectful to me but everyone else she is a little angel. I have tried everything and she just laughs everything off that I try to do. If you get any idea's I would love to hear them. I am a fulltime working Mom with hardly any support and I love to meet new people.
