My 4 yr old son was sick with upper respitory infection for almost 3 weeks... He was better and we stopped his meds .. He did see his pediatrician who was fine with him stopping. He stopped on fri and was fine until sun am. He woke up coughing it was on and off. Mon am around 2:30 he woke up crying and was having trouble breathing . We rushed him to the ER and was admitted. We never got an exact answer other than his WBC was elevated .. They said he could have viral infection possible entrovirus or just a virus or bacterial infection or walking pneumonia... They asked if anything was different we moved into a house 1 yr ago and got a puppy almost 3 months ago. Right away blame went to the dog, but my son has never reacted to the dog since day one. Could he be allergic to the dog??? He is going for an allergy test fri

What can I do next?

I hope he is not allergic to the dog.

My child got sick yrs and yrs ago...similar situation. I got rid of all my toxic cleaners, floor mops w/ spray, toxic candles and laundry detergents. I used dry Swiffer pads. vacuuming, vinegar/water and Seventh Generation products...Even switched to organic bar soaps/soy candles.

My child never went back to the dr.

Even if a dog does not shed, there is still dander. Bathe the dog once a week....if it's not too cold/weather. When you say new house...Do you mean new construction? Outgassing? I know that I cannot sit in a new car or house for very long. Could be the house---If walking pneumonia is ruled out,

Of course he could be allergic to the dog, many people are allergic to dogs.

And, you say he's never reacted to the dog since day one, but he's been continually sick with upper respiratory stuff for the last month - which started 2 months after you got the dog. So yes, it's possible.

I'm glad you're going for the allergy test so you can know for sure.

My son had walking pneumonia when he was 3. He felt better pretty quickly after antibiotics but it took WEEKS for him to kick the cough. It was bad when he would run outside like he couldn't catch his breath. He also coughed more at night. Sure it's possible he could be allergic to the dog but he also could have just caught something. We had four dogs at the time(have 3 now) we didn't get rid of them but we did remove some carpet and had the air ducts cleaned. It was hard to get rid of but he hasn't had a problem since and he is 7.

If he was taking antibiotics and the pedi said it was ok to stop, you need to switch pediatricians immediately. Not sure what other drugs it could be, but I wouldn't want to stop meds if my kid was "feeling" better because just because you "feel" better doesn't mean you are better.

Don't blame the dog till you have proof. It sounds like the virus wasn't dead.

This stuff is just hard to figure out at this age.
There's a nasty virus going around that affecting kids all over the country.
4 is right about the age where tonsil/adenoid trouble can start up - having them removed cleared up some issues for our son.
Allergies/sensitivities - can spring up at any time - but at the same time avoidance can make things worse.
Asthma like symptoms and croup after colds can be pretty common and often as the kids get bigger and their air passages increase in size the problems are sometimes outgrown.
For croup (having trouble breathing - it can be scary - I remember having it when I was a kid) - steam up the bathroom (run the shower) and sit your child in the room till they breathe easier.
Certainly check for allergies but don't get too discouraged if the results are inconclusive.

Of course he's not allergic to the puppy, he stopped his meds to early obviously. They are supposed to be taken until finished. Now the germ is stronger and it's resistant to that antibiotic. I think I'd switch docs if he really said it was okay to stop the med.

I do think that you should consider that your kiddo might have had an allergy to something but the dog surely has jumped on kiddo, sat by him, played with him, etc...he'd have reacted a lot sooner than this.

Are there any fires around, is a new plant blooming (ragweed gets me every year), has there been excessive rain (mold), a new laundry detergent or fabric softener/fragrance, and more things like this.

There are a thousand things he was in contact with and his respiratory system was weakened.

It is not the dog! Virus of some sort. You stopped meds!

Hi there,
I am from Fernley Nevada and the King Fire has been blowing smoke all over where I live and lots up in Tahoe. I am wondering if this is contributing to it as well. my son has asthma and he is a wreck from it.

I doubt it is the dog however an allergy test is a good thing.

Good luck to you
