PLease read through the above site. My nephew was diagnosed with autism now 4 years back and aspergers does fall in this spetrum. Just as with everything else. Alison decided that medication was not an option and that it would have to be worked through. With prayer and patience, she has made sure to form around her and him a support system that includes, family, friends, and the school. Aspergers as with Autism do come in various levels of signs, symptoms an d behaviors. At first we worked on the gluten free diet and food allergies, along with trace minerals and vitams because he was a picky eater. She also stated journaling situational surroundings that would trigger undesired behavior. Today heis a budding 8 year old reading, writing, doing his math, and loves to travel. And yes still not medicated. On a side note I had a students that was not diagnosed until he was 13, no meds, great kid, and is plannign on heading off to college in a few years. I also have another friend who at first jump let the school and doctors talk her in to meds, she still wonders if it wasa good choice.

M. G,
There are a LOT of people out there in your situation. You aren't alone. There are resources in your state that can help you. Please go to the family voices website www.familyvoices.org and look for the family to family health information center in your state. Also, you didn't say, but if behavior is an issue, you should be sure that what others are doing isn't triggering unwanted behaviors. The school should do a full functional behavioral assessment before any behavior plans are done and you should never be pressured by them to put her on medication. I don't blame you for not wanting that. To find out more about the FBA, contact your local Parent Training and Information Center (one for every state funded by Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). Find it by going to www.nichcy.org. There's other info there as well. You will also be able to connect to state resources there and possibly find your autism society in the area.

my daughter is 7 years old and has aspergers! She is doing awesome and now gets very little therapy. Occupational therapy seemed to help her the most in the early years. We have tried it all and done it all but always without medication!!! Its a big sacrifice on our families part but with hard work an aspergers child has a very bright future!!! If you need anything let me know! Books by tony attwood are very helpful.

My son has Asperger's syndrome and we have him in behavioral therapy once every two weeks with a child psychologist. He also goes to social skills therapy once a week, a speech and language therapist once a week, and an occupational therapist once a week. He also has an aid at school that stays with him at all times. It is working wonders for my son, but not all children with Asperger's fit into the same mold. Some may have some of the symptoms, another child may have different symptoms, and some may have all the symptoms. The best way to find out what is right for your child is to have them evaluated by the school, or by a pediatrician that you trust. This is the best site I have found on Aspergers, http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/
I can't begin to tell you all the things I want to, not enough space lol, feel free to message me anytime.

I have a grandson with aspergers and he is 13 as he has grown up and matured he has learned many coping mechanisms, such as finding a quiet place to lessen the stimulation ect, He also has behavioral health and medication. Im not saying it is a perfect situation but he has a lot of love and is fairly simple in what is required of him. I believe this helps him cope. He likes familiar routines, familiar faces, toys that he is use to. I also am bi-polar just want you to know that the medication I take has really improved over the last 15 years and the more that is known about this syndrome the better the treatments will be. You have a positive outlook and that will help you to keep an open mind to do your best as a family to work together.

My sister is 9 and has had Asperger's syndrome for a number of years now. I dont think any thing has ever taken a harder toll on our family. My sister is heavily medicated and I disagree with it completely. She has been ordered out of public school for attacking people severe enough for the police and medics to be called. Your child is special and dont let any one tell you different. Little ones with this syndrome need special care and if you are leaving them at school or daycare make sure they are well taken care of- we have run into people abusing my sister physically because of her behavior. Living with this is super hard. If you ever need any one to talk to, feel free to message me. M. S.
