The elves can get hard to find but the Morgan House in Dublin usually has several to choose from. Santa brings the elves to help him watch over the kids during December because he's so busy at the North Pole getting ready for Christmas. He leaves them with a letter explaining what they do. (Our kids leave their list for Santa and he picks it up and leaves the elves. If you would like to see a copy of the letter I leave email me separately and I'll be glad to share it with you.) He also tells them in the letter to leave the elves in their stockings on Christmas Eve and he'll pick up the elves when he comes to drop off presents.
Our elves can be somewhat "mischevious." Usually after we've been somewhere and/or in the mornings when we wake up we find them doing silly things, such as climbing the Christmas tree, hanging from a ceiling fan, playing games with each other, having crackers and water, etc. Occasionally (actually, rarely) our elves will leave little surprises for the kids, such as a candy cane, a pack of gum, hair barrettes for my daughter, etc. Some people's elves leave presents every day and others don't leave things at all. Some are very active and some only hide during the night. It all depends on how much time (and creativity) you have. Our kids (especially my 5-yr-old daughter) LOVE them and it is so much fun and so rewarding to see her reaction when we find the elves doing silly things.

(An example: we just went to dinner and she took her elves - she has 2 of them, long story - but left them in the car. When we came out of the restaurant, one was sitting in her booster seat and had taken the cap off of her bottle of water and taken several tissues out of the tissue box. Her other one was in the other seat coloring a page in a coloring book that she had also left in the car. How did we do it? My husband was meeting us there and I left my car unlocked and he did it before he came into the restaurant. This was pretty elaborate and it's not always that elaborate. But it was worth it because she was beyond excited to see the mischief they had gotten into!)

It really is a fun tradition to start, but it does take a little work that is definitely worthwhile. Good luck!

You can get an "Elf on the Shelf" from any American Greetings store. Like Maggie W. said, AG is based is Cleveland, so you are supporting a local company when you shop there! :)

I don't know if you guys have heard of Gooseberry Patch - they're a small company based in central Ohio. Anyway, they're also selling the Elf on the Shelf with the book. Theirs can be found here...

http://www2.gooseberrypatch.com/gooseberry/products.nsf/v...

and I think they also have a CD and activity book that goes along with the Elf. He's super cute - I got mine from GBP because we're trying to support local small businesses this year.

Good Luck!

We got ours from www.elf-magic.com It's almost time for Wendell and Julie to come visit. They don't come for too many weeks because of the havoc they cause. :-) It gets hard to come up with something new every morning.

My kids asked for an elf to clean the house when they were younger. It was on their lists for several years. They always thought we didn't get one cause the house was still too messy and Santa didn't want the elf to be totally bogged down in junk!

The Elf on the Shelf is available at American Greetings stores, too, and if you get it there you're supporting a local company :)

"The Elf on the Shelf" is a toy elf, looks like 1950's (I am a child of the 50's, so I can say that!). It watches what the household does all day, then at night it reports back to Santa. The next morning, IT IS IN A DIFFERENT SPOT, watches & reports, etc. Reports good & bad behavior, which reminds kids to have good behavior. The elf is visible, but not obvious - up on a shelf, not on top of the salt shaker on the dining room table! You can buy them, Vermont Country Store has them. Probably Toys R Us has them too.

Have fun!

I think it may be "The elf on the shelf". It's a book that comes with a little elf that is supposed to watch over the house or something like that. I think you can find the book at Barnes and Noble or Borders. Good luck!

So if its what I am thinking of its called Elf on a Shelf and I found it at Hallmark. Its about $30 and it comes with a book. The whole idea behind is that this elf comes to you and watches you for Santa. Each night he flies back to the North Pole and "reports in" to Santa. Its a really great discipline tool. Well worth the money! Good Luck!

I've seen something called "Elf on the Shelf". It's a book with an elf that you hide each night when he returns from giving his "naughty or nice" report to Santa. It has it's own official website at www.elfontheshelf.com. You can also find it elsewhere, try googling it. Good Luck.

Google Elf on the Shelf and you'll see. It's an Elf that comes to your house in December. It hides at night and the kids have to find it in the morning. It reports back to Santa on their behavior. It's about $20.

I actually just bought a cute Christmas Dog that had a bag attached at Walmart for $3. I wrote my daughters a note from Santa saying that he was Santa's Little Helper and there to check on them. I hide it so that they have to find it when they wake up. I put a piece of candy in the bag as a surprise. I will probably get little barettes, earrings, and stuff too. It's just a neat way to get them into the Christmas spirit. You can also threaten that the Elf will tell Santa when they are misbehaving.

Hope this helps!

Hi C.,
I'm not sure if this is what you child wants but we have an Elf on the Shelf. We received it last year for my kids. It came with an elf, that you get to name and a book that explains the reason for the elf being there. I think that if you google Elf on a Shelf it might take you to a website. Its a great idea and now a family tradition. Best of Luck!!
