Are There Movies You Can't Watch Any More Since Having Kids?

Channel surfing and found Schindler's List on tonight. Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley are a couple of my favorite actors. I saw the movie years ago, before I had my son, and I found it very sad and deeply moving. But since I had my son I just can't watch it. My emotions are much more powerful when I see these things - it makes me more angry than it did when I first saw it, my adrenaline goes up, I want to cry, and I have to turn it off. I get the why - I think it's like a mommy vibe for the world, for all the helpless people.

Has anybody else had something similar happen? Did having your child wake up the mama bear in a way that goes beyond your child?

It's a pretty mind-blowing thing, parenthood, isn't it?

What can I do next?

It's not just adult moves that get to me. Kids movies have me in tears all the time.
For instance, Toy Story 3 kills me. My kids love it, but when Andy gives Woody, Buzz and the gang to that little girl at the end and goes off to college I just sob. (I've just teared up writing this). Also, the beginning of 'Up' is some of the most beautiful animation I've ever seen. Such a touching little love story. When you realise that Ellie can't have a baby...oh dear. ;-(

Definitely way more intense for me as a parent. Not so much movies, but more news stories that involve kids. I might have cried before when I heard about something horrible involving a child. Now I sob.

I wasn't pregnant but I had just had a new baby I forget the name of the movie but I think Joaquin Phoenix was in it and basically his son is killed in a car crash at the beginning of the movie. Turned it off right there in the first ten minutes and sent it straight back to Netflix.

I watched "the impossible" at the beginning of this summer, and that was pretty tough to watch as a parent but I powered through because you know they all live :)

I totally agree. I can't deal with anything involving children and any type of tragedy. Like that movie with Tom Hanks where he gets killed in 9/11 and then his son and wife go on without him; cannot deal.

Things get more real somehow when you're working your butt off to produce a happy, well adjusted, healthy, well-mannered, successful person to enter the real world.

I used to watch the show Criminal Minds but after my daughter was born I just can't watch it. It makes me sick to think there are really crazy people like that out there!

The Mel Gibson/Rene Russo movie "Ransom" is the one I can't deal with. The scene where she is on the telephone with the kidnapper(s) and then the gunshot sound (and she goes and throws up in the kitchen sink). I just can't bear it. Even knowing what is coming.

The rest of the movie, I do much better with. But that one scene... ugh. I'm a shuddering mess.

No time to watch adult movies, but kids' movies freak me out way more than I thought they would. The good vs. evil message is presented so dramatically. The animated movies I used to be able to watch make me cringe as I watch my kids' eyes get wide and confused during the dark scenes. Wicked witch or stepmother? Scary. Mean/angry animals? Scary. Shooting at anything? Scary. Death? Scary. Parenthood is definitely an emotional roller coaster. I don't assume the scary parts of the movies will affect them forever ... except Wizard of Oz. Still can't watch that one, and will keep kids away from it as long as I can. There, rant over. Aren't you glad you asked? :)

I love "Heart and Souls" with Robert Downy Jr. There are several places in that movie where I break out in tears. I can't watch it without thinking about how Penny cries for her children. It's a wonderful movie that everyone should see. Do it when the kiddo's are at school so you can watch it uninterrupted.

Here's a link to the IMDB site for this movie.

There is a sundance movie (I think) out called "Bully."
I can't watch it. I know what it's about, kids in jr. high and high school being bullies. Kids that are getting made fun of, picked on, made miserable, for no particular reason.
My girlfriend watched it and said it was heartbreaking and made her so MAD!
I can't watch it. It will piss me off and break my heart at the same time.
