Are Termites Fumigations Safe for Pregnant Woman?

I just found out our landlords are sending us away for 3 days later this month to tent the building and do Termite Fumigation. I am 4 months pregnant and I'm VERY concerned about the effects on my baby once I return home to all the residue. They assure me that it will be safe, but I can't imagine them being 100% right. I've been told that they will inspect the air before they let the tenants in, but what about all the chemicals that are going to get into our clothes, furniture, dishes, cabinets, etc. I am not physically in a condition to pack everything up and move them out, nor to wash them all when I get back! Which is what I would do if I wasn't pregnant and so sick! They have told us they will be providing us with special bags to put our food in. Whoopy!

Anyway, I'm just really concerned. Has anyone here gone through this process while pregnant? Is there anyway to stop them? Make them postpone it for a few months? Or make sure they go with a company that is environmentally friendly and probably more healthy for us as well?

Thank you all in advance for your replies.

I'm sorry - what a pita this must be for you. I think it's a good idea for you to ask them which chemicals will be used and then research those particular chemicals. Unfortunately I suspect that you won't be able to stop them or even delay them from doing the extermination. I'm not sure what your lease states, but most leases have a clause directly related to extermination stating that the landlord is entitled to do so when they deem necessary. If your lease doesn't specifically address extermination then you may be able to negotiate with them to delay for a bit.

Good luck and congrats on your baby.

Those chemicals are not safe for anyone... certainly not a pregnant woman. If you can put it off until after your baby is born then do so... but even then stay out of the house for a few days... a week if at all possible.

we needed to have our house fumigated while I was pregnant, but researched it and found something called "heat blasting". IT does the same thing, just no chemicals. You need to unplug and turn off all appliances, and take out your candles, but pretty easy. The cost was roughly the same as having it tented. The bonus, only out of the house for 4 hours!!!! The house was pretty warm when we came home, but an hour with the AC on and it was fine. If it is a landlord, research youself about the process, then let him know the benefits. If he has to put you out of your house for x days he will have to pay for somewhere for you to live for x days, which would make his costs more. Good luck! If you want the company we went thru let me know.

Hi S.,
My initial thougts to your post is that Chemical are not safe. So I googled for you and found this.

http://orgs.sa.ucsb.edu/tenants/hot_topics_files/Contamin...

It sounds like you need to find out exactly what chemical they will use and google that chemical, as "Effects of xyz chemical and pregancy or unborn child, as well as check with your doctor.

I would rather play it safe than sorry. STAY AWAY and I would even pay for a housecleaner to come clean your home. Preferably one that uses non-toxic chemicals, obviously.

PLEASE take a moment to watch this video about toxins in newborns. http://www.ShareTheCause.com/GoGreen

Best wishes,
