Are Centrum Performance Multivitamins OK to Take with Pregnancy??

Hi Moms,
I am completely out of prenatal vitamins and of course my OB office is closed on Sundays which means I can't get a presciption called in until tomorrow so I'm hoping some of you Mamas might know if it's safe to take the Centrum Performance Multivitam/Multimineral Vitamins??

It's the only multivitamin my husband has but at the top of the bottle it says the vitamin helps to energize your body and mind so I'm not exactly sure if anything in there is harmful to take with pregnancy.

If any of you know the answer, I'd love to know.

Thanks alot for any helpful info!

You can overdo some vitamins and that might harm the baby. Prenatals are at safe levels for an infant in utero. I'd say go to the store and by otc prenatals before taking something meant for a non pregnant woman.

Personally, I would not risk it because it sounds like it may have some herbs or stimulants in it. I market a product that has been tested on pregnant women with amazing results. Email me if you'd like more info.

Good luck with the pregnancy!

Absolutely not!! I just spoke w/ a friend yesterday regarding the issue of vitamins (she had just returned from a vitamin seminar) and they said Centrum is the WORST vitamin out there b/c it has led in it.

I think you'll be okay w/ 1 or 2 days w/o the correct vitamins, thus taking none till you get your Rx. There are also congruent vitamins at Whole Foods for prenatal that are just as good as what your doctor prescribes and usually cheaper.

Just in case, my friend recommended the USANA vitamins. You can only order them online; they have received the "Top 5-Star Rating" and "God Medals Achievement" and some other awards as well. Needless to say, she won my vote and I'm changing my family's vitamin ASAP.

Take care of yourself and that precious gift of yours.

I am not a doctor but I would say definately no on that one - any kind of "performance" or "energy" vitamins usually have some kind of herbal blend or other stuff in them that are not straight vitamins/minerals. I rememeber when I was pregnant before I got the prescription for my Prenatal vitamins I got some generic over the counter ones as Kroger for pretty cheap - not as good as the prescription but better than risking it. If it is only a couple of days I wouldn't worry about it too much - I'm sure every pregnant woman has gone a day or two without vitamins before! :) Good for you for being cautious!!

I would buy some over the counter prenatals until you can get your prescription filled. Or, just try to make sure you're eating some green veggies (spinach is great) and fruit for the next few days to make sure you're getting plenty of good stuff in your diet. I wouldn't take the Performance vitamins not knowing what might be in it that could be harmful to a developing baby.

i'm sure you'd be fine w/o it for a few days. i've also taken over the counter ones too.

I'm just now seeing this post (Tuesday) so this may be a little late but...if this happens again, you may want to get a bottle of generic OTC prenatal vitamins to have on hand if you run out of your prescription. Some vitamins meant for adults may include herbs (ginseng, caffeine, etc.) that you may not want to have while pregnant. Just check the label; you can often look up ingredients on WebMD to find out recommendations for pregnancy/nursing.

NO - don't take something unless you know exactly what is in it. If it says performance it might have an herb you don't need to take in it while pregnant or nursing. Most other regular multivitams are ok tho just read the labels. You will be prob ok if you are only out of prenatals for only a day. But the best way is to eat correctly. Make sure you get the your folic acid from fruits and green veggies(spinch, collard greens,) dried beans, and whole grains Lots of clean water too! Prenatal OTC are there to just buy and take - just compare the label to what your prescription one has and you can see where they might be different. You will see they are not much different at all and a lot cheaper.

I took a regular women's multi with iron during my last pregnancy, and an extra calcium supplement. This time, I'm taking two flintstones vitamins every day. It seems to be working alright.
