Anyone with Low White Blood Cell Count During Pregnancy?

I have had this issue during all of my pregnancies. For some reason, my white blood cell count drops significantly when I am pregnant, and then goes back up after delivery. I have seen a hematologist, infectious disease doctor, and a high-risk OB and every test they have done has come back normal providing no reason for my count to be so low. I even had a bone marrow biopsy(which btw I would not wish upon anyone!) and that too came back normal. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar situation.

What can I do next?

I had a really low blood count during my pregnancy with my last child. It was so low that my PCP was sending me to the hospital for a blood transfusion. I didn't want to take blood from just anyone so my mom went to donate blood. I paniced. I was working in NY at the time and had to leave work early. While waiting at the bus station, I called my OB/GYN and he was angry. He said that when you are pregnant, your blood count drops anyway that there was no need for a blood transfusion. He had called my PCP and screamed at her and said that he did not want me going through that. Of course, it did not go back up after I had the baby. I had to see a blood doctor every week to get my count checked and I also had a bone marrow biopsy (which was very painful). It was negative thank gooddness. I'm just a little anemic that's all. No harm, no foul. It's funny because it has been five years and my mom is still wondering what they did to her blood that she donated?

I had this happen to me with my first pregnancy (my son is now 9). The ob that I was using at the time was in a total panic...it was not discovered until delivery day..and after I delivered she was drawing my blood every hour for two days to keep an eye on it, gently warning me I may need a blood transfusion or in the most extreme case, my spleen removed. Needless to say I was freaking out. After I went home she was sending me for blood work every week for a month to watch what would happen even though by the time I left the hospital my count was normal....fast forward three years to my next pregnancy, new ob, explained what happened with the previous pregnancy, they said they'd keep an eye on it, but it was not uncommon (would have been nice to know that, but apparently my former ob had never seen it before) and with the second pregnancy I had a lot of blood work to keep checking my levels and it did not happen that time. I think if you have had all those horrible tests and everything came back negative you're okay! It was explained to me by my new ob that it just happens to some women during pregnancy....don't think you have anything to worry about.

I had a B12 deficiency during my last 2 pregnancies. My doctor said she was worried I would need a transfusion during deleivey so she sent me to a hemotologist. I had to get B12 shots (I think monthly) and as soon as I had the babies I was fine. They said it was due to malabsorbtion, no matter how much B12 I took in though foods, my body would absorb it. If you are worried about the baby, the doctor assured me that he was fine because he was getting what he needed.
Good luck with it and with all your kids I have 3 and I'm go crazy sometimes, can't imagine having 4 with one on the way!
