Hi,

My husband I are desperatley trying to get out of our 2 bedroom apartment which is getting very small as our two children are growing up (2 year old and 8 month old) Our budget is pretty limited as I stay home with my babies. We know where some of the "best" areas to live are, but we can not afford these areas at all. We have found a house in our price range in the Nachodoches and Higgins Rd area. Any comments on the area? Crime rates? Schools? The elementary school is Northern Hills Elementary and Highschool is Madison. We have lived here only two years and do not know a lot about all the different areas of SA. We want to stay in the north/north central area.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your responses! The house we were looking at ended up having problems that we did not want to deal with. From everyone responses and our own research we have decided that we definately want to find a home in the northeast SA area. I love Mamasource! It is wonderful to have a support group of moms to bounce ideas and questions off of.

The area is ok but I would also look into the Windcrest area. They have custom homes, usually very large, and the city is renovating the area, including Walzem. The city has a fire dept, police, post office, swimming pool, tennis, golf, parks, walking trails, womens club, gardening club, their own elem school, etc...so much to offer. You could get a really great custom home for a pretty good price. Good Luck!!

T.,
Hello, I highly recommend Northern Hills Elementary. My oldest daughter finished there two years ago and my youngest finishes there this year. The area is fine...minimal crime. Probably the lowest in the San Antonio Area in my opinion. I lived just up the street from Northern Hills Elementary for 13 years in the British Commons Subdivision until my ex-husband and I divorced. But, I really like that area of town. Not alot of traffic compared to other areas of town and came highly recommended when we moved here back in 1991 as far as the school district. I hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless you and your family. M.

Its a pretty nice area...depending on the street and who lives next door. That area of town is very diverse. I lived off of Thousand Oaks and Nachogdoches. Not really big on crime...our part of town was on the news only once in the 13 months we lived there and it was for a bad car wreck. If the street you live on is neat and nice then you are good. I hope that made some sense :) Good luck!

We lived in the area for several years until we purchased our home last year. Both of our girls went to Northern Hills and we all loved it. The neighborhood was great for us. The neighbors and I always talked, watched out for each other, shared food and barbeques. I don't think that it is a bad area at all. But I do suggest to get to know the neighborhood in the day and night before making any moves. That is for any neighborhood.

Best of luck,

Kimberly L

I live near that area, drive by it every day. We love this area of town. My oldest goes to Madison HS and he likes it. My youngest will be going to Harris Middle next year. We have been here almost a year and have had no problems. I work for the NEISD and it is a good school district. There are a few houses for sale right off of Judson near me(towards 1604). I'm not sure of all the streets, they are near Lost Creek, Kissing Oak. Email me if you want to know more. Hope this helps.

I have lived in that area for 8 years now and have not experienced any high crime, drugs etc (knock on wood). I really loved my neighborhood as soon as I saw it. I guess with any neighborhood you need to know your neighbors, get to know your community and you'll be ok. Like I said I don't know of much crime in our area. My daughter goes to Longscreek Elemetary and we really love the school. The principal and teachers are awesome. Our principal was out directing traffic this morning because the police officer was not there. She will go to Harris Middle School and Madison High School. I really think the northeast is a great side of town to raise a family. It's not as crowded as the northwest and not as expensive as north central, but it's still nice. Good luck.

I would not move over there, especially with babies. High crime and drug issues.

What is the price range you are looking for? By when do you need to move? I have a house I rent out in the Churchill area, (quite, cul-de- sac ranch) . My present tenant lease is up in June, and I am not sure if I will renew it, as they have yet to pay this month's rent.
