I would love to plant some hydrangeas in front of my house. It faces west and gets a lot of sunlight in the afternoon, but that is where I would love to have some. I know they prefer partial shade, so, I would love some tips on planting hydrangeas. Thanks a bunch!!

What can I do next?

I live on Cape Cod (Massachusetts) and we have Hydrangeas like crazy. I believe they do like shade and the type of soil (I am sorry - I can't remember if it is acidic or not) is very important. They are not big fans of heat, so I would say (for Kansas) plant them so the cooler part of the day is the time when they get sun.

Best of luck - they are beautiful!

I live in PV and we have 3 hydrangeas on the W side of our house. There is a large cherry tree which helps filter the afternoon sun. I like the flowers to be blue so my husband puts aluminum sulfate by the roots every year. They do droop in the hot summer but perk back up after watered. In the fall/early winter do not cut back the sticklike branches. The new growth in the spring starts on the dead looking sticks. We have also found that they alternate years for blooming. Good luck!!!

Hi Kelly,
I'm in IL and I've planted the Oak Leaf and Pinky WInky hydrangea in my yard. I have them on the east side, one on the corner, one up by the porch and three under the Cottonwood tree. They get morning sun and a some afternoon. I would suggest an area that can help filter some of the sun, like under a tree or on the side of your home. Talk to your local nursery, find someone that will not rush you with your questions (or even come out to your home), show them pictures of the area (if you have any) because with all the variety you will be able to come up with something.
Good Luck!

I just planted one last spring, but so far, so good for it this year. I'm on the Missouri side from you.

The front of my house faces east, and which is where I planted mine. It does get a small amount of early morning sun, then a small amount of late afternoon sun. The front of the yard is heavily shaded, so I picked this particular spot for its at least somewhat limited sun. It will droop if it gets too dry/hot, but perks up nicely when watered. Mine is filling out nicely w/ foilage, as well looks like it setting up alot of blooms.

I think you will do best with morning sun, of very, very limited afternoon sun.
