Anyone Have a Partial Hysterectomy
I found out I have fibroid tumors when I was 11 weeks pregnant. I had very painful abdominal pains. My daughter is almost 2 now, but the fibroids have doubled in size. My OBGYN says I need to have a partial hysterectomy or have an embolization (blocks blood flow to the fibroid causing them to die). The difference is with the hysterectomy they will be removed but with the embolization they can grow back. Has anyone had experience with this? I have never had surgery, just 4 kids, but am freeked out. I need to do something soon because I am in sooo much pain & have felt them get larger since my last ultrasound 4 months ago. How is recovery time? If I leave my ovaries will I need to be on hormone therapy, will I get periods, what are the side effects? Any & all info would be greatly appreciated. My husband & I are going to meet with my OBGYN soon so I am trying to prepare all my questions before the meeting.

Personally I would seek a second opinion before having this surgery. Not to say that it isn't the best solution or that your doctor isn't good, but possibly another doctor will have another solution for you. It is major surgery and for many doctors hyst is the first line treatment instead of the last. Your doctor should be fine with this, or even recommend it for your own peace of mind (why wouldn't you want someone to get a second opinion if you are sure you are doing the right thing?).
If you have a partial hyst (ovaries intact) you will not need hormone replacement- this is the best way to go as being thrown suddenly into menopause can be very tough. You won't get periods but you will ovulate. There can be issues with blood supply to the ovaries after hyst because part of the ovarian blood supply comes from the uterus, but this is usually minimal.

I had a Partial Vaginal hyster 1 year ago. The recovery was not bad and it was the best thing I ever did!

Just a quick answer. I had a hysterectomy four years ago because of fibroids, pain and heavy bleeding. I am 46 now. It is the best thing I ever did for myself!!! My doctor was going to try to take it out vaginally (no scar or cutting into abdomen) but it didn't work out like he had planned because of the fibroids. So I have a c-section like cut/scar. I was in the hospital for 4 days. It was painful at first, and hard to get out of bed, but I just pushed myself to get up and get moving. I also had never had major surgery before. I have my ovaries and I still can tell when I ovulate, just by my moods and maybe tender breasts, etc. But no more bleeding!!!! Yay! You don't need hormone therapy if you have your ovaries. Really the side effects are all good ones. Like I said before, best thing I ever did for myself. If you want, you can send me a private message if you need more info. Good luck!
