Anyone Had a Frenectomy/ Gum Graft

I have scheduled a frenectomy and gum graft following a consult with the peridontist. I was told when I scheduled it that I would be able to work the next day, no problem. I wonder if I will FEEL like working?? I am just not so sure about this. They make it sound so simple....but to me it sounds painful! My frenectomy will be in front of my lower front teeth with the graft on the lower right front tooth. (don't know if it makes much difference.)
Thanks for the input, mamas!

So What Happened?

Thanks everybody! The procedure went great! The shots stung a little then nothing :) That was Tues. Today, Friday, the roof of my mouth is still sore...but otherwise, feeling good! I guess I shouldn't have been so worried. Thanks for all the info!

I have a gum graft last summer and to be honest it was a lot better than I exptected. I do not do well with those sorts of things but here is what I did. I took my ipod so that I did not have to hear all of the stuff going on when they did it. It did not take very long and I was out of there. I had a milk shake right after as they say the cold was good for the swelling. I did sleep most of the first day but felt great after that. It was more of a bother than a pain. Good luck!

My son had a frenectomy (his was a tongue tie) it didn't phase him at all of course he was 3 so that might have somehing to do with it.
Are you going to be all the way under? If yes you might want to take the next day off because I know going under is the worst part of a surgery for me. It knocks me out and I don't feel up to doing much the next day because I'm still tired.

I had a frenectomy when I was around 18. It was on top of my two front teeth. It stung from what I remember, and was a little uncomfortable, but did not hurt very much. Afterwards I don't remember having any issues. However, with a gum graft and a frenectomy, you might want to call in sick the next day and just rest.

I had a frenectomy several years back. I recall it being uncomfortable. If you can manage to take the next day off, I would suggest it. I did have some other dental work done at the same time, so that could have added to it, but I remember my tongue (which was tied) being sore. Since you're also doing a graft, I would rather be on the safe side and ask for the day off. If you feel great, you could always just surprise them and go in to work. :) Good luck to you!

The frenectomy only bothered me when I bit into something.
I have heard the grafts are more painful.
I think it will depend on your pain tolerance.

Well I know one woman who had that, and she said it was very painful.
Then I know another woman who had that, and she was fine the next day.
Get pain meds if you need to.

Eating after... well ask Doc about that. Probably lots of liquids/smoothies afterwards.
And ask 'when' after the procedure, you can expect to 'eat.'

I think, it really depends on the Specialist who does it.
Some are better than others, and it also depends on your pain handling and healing.

But who knows.

Sorry, this is not real helpful.
Just what I know what those women told me.

Yes, I had this exact combo of procedures, same location. I don't remember the frenectomy being a problem. But the gum graft was pretty painful, especially the roof of the mouth where they obtained the tissue for grafting. It hurt more than the worst "pizza burn" I've ever had.

I had the procedures done at least 20 years ago, so I don't recall whether or not I worked the following day. I do remember taking prescription pain meds for at least a week. (But I'm a big baby about pain and have no aversion to taking medication.)

Good luck, I'm sure you'll do just fine. And the good news is after a while the graft blends in so well you won't be able to see that it ever happened.

I had a gum graft and hate to say it but it was pretty bad. The doctor considered doing more teeth so took so much gum from the roof of my mouth only about 5 years later does it finally feel ok. I had two teeth done and said no way to more. something about the procedure either really hurt or was really uncomfortable. Then a stitch kept poking me. I think she wasn't very good.... Something else came up too. I remember I actually went back to work that day but had to leave. I likely had it done on a Friday. I had two very young kids at the time so I functioned but I do remember it sucked. I floss like cray now. Good luck!

Not sure if I'm too late, but just catching back up with this site. I, also, had this exact combo of prodecures, with my graft going to my lower left front tooth. It was a few years ago, but I'm pretty sure I went back to school the next day. It was definitely uncomfortable, but I don't remember it being anything severe. The roof of my mouth where they took the gum was very sore for a while. Unfortunately my grafts (I ended up trying it a second time) didn't stick. My periodontist (was in NY at that time) said that can be common, but I hope yours sticks. I'm actually looking into attempting another graft again, as the gum is getting very low now, so I hope yours goes great. Good Luck!
