Anyone Given Liquid Calcium to Infant(3 1/2 Months) for Reflux??

I am constantly looking into treatments/remedies for my daughter's silent reflux. She is currently on Zantac which only seems to work well the week after we up the dose. I really want to get her off this medication but still keep her at least as comfortable as she is on it. She is also going to a chiropractor a couple times a week-no dramatic results with that yet. I have read about people giving liquid calcium to babies. Has anyone out there given a baby liquid calcium for reflux? If so, how much? Is it safe? other info? Any other remedies that helped baby's reflux?
thanks so much-J.

What can I do next?

place your finger horizontally under her sternum and xyphoid process ( where diaphram muscle is). gently and slowly compress and then traction down towards her belly button. HOld for 1-2 minutes. It could be that she is just needs more space for her digestion, and the nerve that runs through there is irritated. do it consistently, it may be uncomfortable for her, but it will bring relief

My son was on Zantac for his first six months, but I don't know anything about liquid calcium. What I do know is that on our pediatrician's recommendation, we let him sleep strapped in his bouncer (in his crib with the mattress all the way down so he couldn't fall out) with the vibration running and this helped him sleep way better than just raising one end of the mattress. Being upright is supposed to help keep the acid down. Best of luck and hang in there.

My son had colic/acid reflux. I did a full blown alternative medicine approach. Gripe water (can be purchased at Rainbow),Boiron makes all natural homeopathic medicine with absolutely no side effects for babies in the form of little water capsules that you break open and squirt into the baby's mouth(no food or water 15 minutes before and after administering), I changed my diet (no onions, garlic, tomatoes, anything acidic, no citrus, no nuts. I ate plenty of dill, parsley and even made chamomile tea w/dill for him to drink.) I also brought him to an excellent chiropractor religiously.

Here's a thought. Try putting the baby to sleep on a foam wedge. They sell them for way too much money on the internet, but I bought one for $3.00 at a fabric store. Having her sleep on an incline should help.

The good news is that it should go away by about four months. My son's pediatrician said that it's an under-developed gut.

Please google "reflux and chiropractic care".....I have a chiropractor who has very successfully treated infants (in just a few treatments) and helped them overcome reflux.

He described it as a problem with the nervous system, and that it is very common.

Best wishes!

Hi,

I know that you are probably not interested in other medicine, but here is my experience with my little girl who has the same issue. Zantac did not help and it made her constipate. The doctor switched her to Prevacid (resolvable tablet) which she takes with water once a day in the morning. Prevacid really helped her. In your daughter's case, even though the milk doesn't come out it still comes up to her throat, I think, and the acid irritates her throat, repeatedly. Studies have shown that untreated early childhood reflux has been linked with throat cancers later. We were also thinking about taking the homeopathic approach, but upon learning that we went with the medication. My daughter was on Prevacid for a year, and we recently stopped it because she is doing much better. Good luck!

look into acid reflux homeopathy. A good homeopath knows what to do and how to do it, and will go by HER current health and state of being when deciding on her treatment. Very important distinction from the ready-mis from Boiron that is made by ”one size fits all”. By all means, try it, but if it does not work, go to see professional. acid reflux is not just about supplements and herbs. It is also about balancing the harmony of your body - i guess that is why you do chiro...so use all angles - homeopathy is for balance as well. Be prepared to answer a lot of questions – starting from your pregnancy. It should be a long and detailed interview, so chose someone who is devoted to this healing modality alone, not someone who “also does” homeopathy. Letters CCH after the last name is a good start looking for qualified homeopath.

Too much calcium can cause various problems with bone growth to cardiac arhythmias. I suggest doing what the others suggest . Zantac , however, inhibits the acid pumps of the stomach it is not "pain relief" per say .

Hard and fast rules :

Smaller , more frequent feedings.
Keep her upright after feeding , lying on side or back promotes liquids rising up .
Thicken formulas with rice cereal and burp every ounce
Keep up the Zantac and ask your pediatrician about something for pain relief.

She will grow out of it , usually, by 6 to 8 months ( around the time she is able to sit up well). If not, have her referred to a Pediatric gastroenterologist to make sure she doesn't have a sructural problem with her gut.

Good Luck !
