Hi all. I've had the Mirena IUD since January of this year. While I love the low maintenece Birth control, I've noticed I've put on about 8 lbs. I've never been much a big eater and I've been blessed with a high metabolism but the weight keeps packing on and nothing I do works. It's mainly in the stomach region. Am I crazy or has anyone else noticed weight gain with Mirena? What did you do about it?

What can I do next?

hello Carie, I got the IUD and I have not noticed any weight gain, however my eating habits have changed. My metablism is also high so I have been fortunate to never have to watch what I eat. Since the IUD I eat little all day long and then my big meals. Fortunately I have not gained weight, I am sure it will catch up with me one day:(

I have had the same problem, 10 lbs. since November. I also have been blessed with a high metabolism and 4 consecutive years of nursing. My second child is cutting back now that he's two. I had an IUD put in last January; not Mirena, but the copper one with no hormones. In my case, I don't think the weight gain is from the iud. But it is frustrating since I've never had to worry too much about it. I'll be 40 next year so I guess age is catching up with me. :)

I know with birth control pills, weight gain is sometimes a side effect of the hormones. Maybe Mirena uses the same hormones.

Another factor might be simply that you are a busy mom with 2 kids now and you are not as conscious about your eating habits as before when you had more time to think. lol

Sorry I don't have any better advice. Good luck

I just got the Mirena IUD less than 6 weeks ago. I haven't noticed any weight gain, but I'll definitely be more consious of it. Unlike you, I have not been blessed with a high metabolism so I'm sure if it's a side effect, I'll be impacted by it. I do have a question for you though. I was told my periods would get lighter and less frequent, however, since I've had it, my first period was 2 1/2 weeks long and my second was 11 days long. Did you have this problem?

HI Carrie!
I did have the same thing happen as well as my sister. I had mine removed hoping that would help, however.... it didn't help. I couldn't loose weight just by doing nothing (like I did before) I have noticed I have to workout with weights and eat right and then I'm ok. It's just not like it used to be with the great super high metabolism and all. I told my sister not to worry about having it removed. It's not like the weight will just vanish :) The benefits out weigh the weight :) My suggestion is to really workout hard. I mean push ur muscles till u can't push them any more.
Best of Luck!!!
Marg
