Anyone Ever Had Fluid Behind Ears?

This past Monday I woke up with a 102 fever but a few hours after taking meds it went away. What didn't go away was me feeling REALLY dizzy and nauseous....After feeling like that for almost 48 hours I decided to go to the doctor (my internal medicine doctor). He told me I have fluid behind my ears and prescribed me clarinex (but I've never had a problem with allergies). Well I've been on the Clarinex for 2 days now and I've started to feel better but since last night I was getting dizzy and off balance again (not nauseous). I called and spoke with the nurse this morning and she told me to give it another day for the medicine to kick in.. It's really hard as you all might imagine, taking care/entertaining a 6.5 month old while I feel this way ( thank gosh I have someone that watches him 3 days per week at my home).
Has anyone ever tried the candle procedure at a spa that takes out the wax in your ear (not even sure if that's safe or would help)? Has this happened to anyone before/what did you do/what was prescribed to you/how long did you feel dizzy for?
The only thing that was different that I can think of is that I was sick with the flu a few weeks ago and after feeling better, I flew (but I've been home for over a week before I started feeling this way). I don't have flu like symptoms AT ALL....
Any advice/suggestions would be great..

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies for your help... Well after not feeling 100% after getting off the clarinex and still getting dizzy I went back to the doctor and he told me I have a slight case of Vertigo... Ugghh! I'm hoping it doesn't come often but he prescribed this medicine called Antivert and told me to only take it at night because it causes sleepyness, WELL did it do the opposite on me, I was up all night practically. Needless to say I stopped taking the medicine and thankfully on it's own (knock on wood) I haven't felt dizzy in about 3 days....

I had a friend who told me about that and said it was great. She said that it got so much crud out of her ears. That's all I know though, good luck!

Hi I had very similar symptoms and was checked for fluid. No fluid but I had a punctured ear drum from an infection. It healed (90%) on it's own. I still have residual problems from time to time. Clarinex is also given to sinus sufferers as well as allergy folks. I think he gave it to you because if you truly have fluid in your ears your sinuses and eyes can become affected as well. I would give the meds another day or two and if that doesn't help get another opinion. I wouldn't be too stoked to have wax put in my ear but who knows? LOL.

Hi , Kristy :0)
Yes , I have had fluid trapped inside my ears ; VERY uncomfortable. I have used ear candles for years , anytime I had trouble with my ears. They work.
However , they're tricky to use ... it's definitley something you cannot do on your own. Your two options with ear candles are to either purchase some at a health food store ( you might need two for each affected ear ) where usually they have some print-out instructions on how to use them. That is what I did.
Or , there are people who actually do ear-candling. I'd say it's worth trying ! Good luck to you !

HI The ears are part that help with the balance. So that is why you feel dizy.Once the fluid drys up should get better. It is the movement that is cause the dizyness. I had this for a week. My dc gave me something for the dizyness.

Kristy,

The fluid is a result of your flu. Anything that causes fluid in the sinuses can cause fluid in the ears, because you have small drainage tubes that go from the middle ear to the sinus/throat area and the fluid can back up into the ear. That is why medications used to drain/dry sinuses work for fluid in the ear or ear infections.

The fluid in the ears can cause nausea, dizziness, loss of balance, etc. Your tubes are probably a bit swelled still and should improve over the next few days.

Give the meds a few more days. If they don't work, you may want to consider some sort of decongestant to help with drainage.

I don't know about the candle wax thing, but my son that had all the ear infections also use to get a lot of wax in his ears. What I use to do was put warm water in his ears with a bulb syringe, have him lay still for about five minutes, and then turn his head and let the water drain out. The warm water melted the wax. Sometimes I had to do it to each ear two or three times, but it really helped.

Hope you feel better soon!

I have had many ear problems throughout my life. At one point I was fighting them constantly. I finally went to a chiropractor and have not had an ear problem since then. You may want to check this out.

I have allergies all the time, and on a few occasions have had this problem. Seriously, if it doesn't go away go see a ear, nose and throat doctor. It stinks!!! As for the wax thing, I've heard that can be dangerous, you need the wax in your ear. But you know what you are doing. Good luck, Jen

Hi Kristy,
I have had allergies and sinus problems my whole life. Actually I have fluid behind my ear drum right now. This is only the second time I had the fluid behind the ear drum though. The first time, I had it so long that I ended up with Vertigo (this is where you feel dizzy--you feel like you are intoxicated, though you haven't been drinking-very serious if it gets to this point-see and ENT)I was put on an antibiotic. This time the doctor didn't give me anything because she said the fluid was clear. Her recommendations were to pop my ears every 1/2 hour by plugging my nose and wear a bite guard at night, because I am putting pressure on my jaw which lines the tube that runs to your ear. She also told me to take muscinex. I have taken every type of allergy medicine and don't feel that they work--I haven't tried this muscinex (spelling??) yet. Oh and as far as the ear wax removal--as the last response said--ear wax is good for your ears, if you are really considering it-I would ask your doctor. Remember fluid doesn't have to mean it is a build up of ear wax. Clear fluid is what is usually behind your ear drum and an ear wax removal method won't cure the problem behind the ear drum. I hope this helps--good luck

I also had this only about 2 months ago. I went to the doctor because it was driving me crazy, I could not concentrate and felt like I was underwater with noises being muffled around me. My doctor told me that you can get the fluid behind the ears from having congestion, either in your head nose or throat and it can drain behind your ears instead of down your throat like it is supposed to. The only medicine to take is for congestion and an antibiotic if it is causing an infection in the ears. It is just one of those annoying illnesses you have to suffer through - it will eventually go away - Mine took about 5 days to get better so that I was no longer hearing the muffled sound in my ears.

Hope you feel better soon.

ok this sounds weird but get over the counter saline nasal spray- just buy the store brand
and spray your nose a LOT a LOT over the course of the day-
somehow the pressure of the squirting gets up into your ears & helps clear them out/drain

our ped told us this w/ my son bcse he got lots of ear infections & fluid in his ears and it really really helped him
