Anyone Else Get Voles?

I would be VERY concerned if my dog ate a dead rodent. Especially since you don't know how they died. I would not be happy if my dog got poisoned by ingesting them and the poison they ate/consumed - even if they are small.

I would contact Terminix or some other pest control company to find out how to deal with them.

As to the snakes? Are they just plain old garden snakes or what? snakes EAT the rodents....you know - the food chain? I would want them around to deal with the rodents!! :) I know - not ideal - but I would wonder and ask around the community what has caused the influx or rise in population of the rodents and snakes. You can usually trace it back to something....a building...a new construction project over once deserted land....

My husband uses a pitchfork and buries the bodies as a warning to others that may wander into our yard. :) :p

Try putting out moth balls. I know they repel most rodents maybe snakes too.

I was watching Billy the Exterminator a while back and he treated a yard with garlic water for snakes. Just boil garlic cloves in water and spray the yard. He said snakes hate garlic -- that might work on rodents too. Or you could try sprinkling garlic powder all over your yard. It might smell like a pizza restaurant but that's better than snakes and rodents.

Ick! Reminds me of cats eating rodents and bringing their little "offerings" to the front porch for their masters!!

I don't know if this would work on voles or not, but it was written about getting rid of MOLES to Dear Anne and Dear Abby (I can't keep those dearly departed ladies straight) that you can leave Juicy Fruit chewing gum in their "holes" in your yard for them to eat. They love them, but after they eat them, they die because of the way it clogs their digestive system.

(Sounds gruesome, but well...)

Anyway, I'd try hard to get rid of bodies before your dog eats them because if someone has poisoned them, your dog might get sick too. (It's just a guess on my part, but you could call an exterminating place and ask them. They'll know the answer to that.)

However, I doubt that they would want to say that the Juicy Fruit idea gum works. That would take money out of their pockets.

ug, they're so gross. They ate all my tulip bulbs last year. My husband got rid of them by filling their holes with poison peanuts. We were lucky they stuck to the front yard, or we'd have been worried the dog would eat the poison peanuts by mistake.

Humane ways to help keep them away are :I have heard of putting Pin wheels in the ground will make noise and scare them away. I guess they would think a predator was coming. I have used human hair in the past to keep pests out of my garden but that is hard to come by for obvious reasons. Also Castor oil and water every 4 months to the ground.
It is kinda scary that your dogs eat them too b/c your dogs could get intestinal parasites from the stinkers.
