Anyone a Dentist? (Wisdom Tooth Pain)

I have all four of my widom teeth, the first one came in when I was in high school, but I have plenty of room in my mouth (big mouth!) for them so it was never a problem. Now the bottom two are coming in, and I have profound pain in my jaw, throat (tonsils out, so its not that), and all the way along my jawline down to my chin. My lymph nodes are also swollen in my jaw and the back of my head on that side.

Is this normal? The jaw pain and swollen nodes? I callled and left a message for our dental office to call me on Monday, but in the mean time I'm just taking Motrin for the pain in the mornings and evening.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The dentist had me come in this morning and looked at both teeth along with my last set of xrays. He said the one tooth is infected (well, around the tooth) and prescribed an antibiotic to get that taken care of, and said both bottom wisdom teeth should come out. So I also got a referral to an oral surgeon for a consult.

Fun... considering I just had my tonsils out two months ago. Considering surgery right now is NOT what I wanted.
Thank you for all the advice! I appreciate it!

You might have an infection going on, I have all 4 wisdom teeth( too chicken to get them out), but I do get an infection sometimes if food particles get under the gums. I buy Glyoxide antiseptic over the counter product it really helps. It takes a few days but the pain gets less everyday. I now have a molar tooth giving me trouble & I have ear pain, also pain in my gland, so will be calling the dentist myself Mon. Good luck. A.

I don't think that the lymph nodes could be caused by simply still having your wisdom teeth. Your body is fighting something. Get it checked out.

That said, before I had my wisdom teeth out, I had pain all along my jaw bone to my chin too. Turns out, the roots grow quite a bit longer than the regular molars and they were growing along the bone. I wanted to see the teeth after they were removed, and you can see where they turn a right angle where they were growing along the bone. I would imagine that the pain in the front of your mouth could be from a similar thing.

When I had the pain and symptoms you are describing it WASN'T wisdom teeth - it was an abcess and I needed a root canal.

Call the emergency dental number if it gets worse - mine did and I needed a shot for pain in the dr. office while he took time to figure out my problem and someone else's.

Years ago I was scheduled to have my wisdom teeth removed but the weekend before my appointment my whole face swelled up and I was in so much pain. I went to the ER and it turns out I had an abscess, they had to drain the abscess and give me antibiotics. I had three of my wisdom teeth pulled the following week. Hope everything goes well for you.

Hey Becky,
Tooth pain stinks! I had a lot of teeth issues the last few months too. It definetely could be your wisdom teeth, but I wonder if you don't also have some type of infection in the tooth. Can you get an emergency visist at another clinic? Our dentist is in Hopkins (a ways from our home, but well worth it) and he does emergency visits. The first visit is free too, x-rays and all. If you find you may need a visit sooner than Monday, check out the website:

Hope you are feeling better soon. Let us know what happened.

I am not a dentist, but it sounds like it could easily be wisdom teeth causing the discomfort.
I have always heard that the later you wait to have them removed (if it is necessary to remove them) the more painful it is. So since you are older, perhaps that is why you seem so much more uncomfortable than most people remember being when theirs came in.

Mine were never a bother until I flew across country.. seemed like (maybe it was coincidental) it sparked some aches/pains with my jaws that was not normal and it wasn't long after (a month or two?) that I had them removed. No more problems.
Hang in there. Your dentist will let you know if that is the cause.

I am just a dental assistant so i know that those wisdom teeth need to come out! On Monday make an appointment with you dentist so they can verify that it is your wisdom teeth and then get them out. Even if you have a large mouth you should get them removed I worked for an orthodontist for years so I will tell you what I know. As we get older our teeth continue to shift and your bottom teeth continue to move forward (slowly). Have you even notice how elderly people that have their real teeth have major crowding in their lower jaw? So if you keep your wisdom teeth they will just put that much more presser on your teeth and make that much more crowding in the future. So even if your dentist tells you to just take pain meds until they come in you need to insist on having them out. Any orthodontist would agree.

My mouth was large, but I had all my wisdom teeth removed when I was 15, because they were causing me so much pain (they never came through, they just went up & down for years). My husband still has all of his & they come all the way through & go back down, but he has never had your kind of pain with his.
Personally if lymph nodes are swollen then you have an infection (it may not be in your mouth). I would speak to your dentist & your doctor.

God bless!
