I am thinking of trying Weightwatchers designed for Nursing moms to help lose my weight gained from pregnancy. I was never overweight- and was actually quite fit before pregnancy and I've never done any of these diets before. I was wondering if any moms have tried this plan and if they liked it?

What can I do next?

Dear D.:
I did Weight Watchers before I got married 2 years ago and lost 15lbs! I have a 3 month old daughter and have rejoined the program. I also breastfeed her. So far the program is working. I gained over 50lbs with my daughter and only have about 12 more to get back down to my pre-pregnancy weight. I would definitely recommend the program. It's worth a try and is working for me.

D.,

I did weight watchers for the year before I got pregnant and absolutely loved it. It is all about eating healthy and watching your portions rather than excluding whole groups of food like other diets. Actually, I wouldn't even consider Weight Watchers a diet, it is more just watching what your eat (hence the name). I enjoyed the meetings very much as well. You get a lot of support, plus just the accountability of getting on the scale each week at the meeting helped keep me motivated and on track. Good luck!

Hi D.. I am a mom of an almost 3 month old. I am just starting that diet now, reluctantly. I really don't want to go on a diet, but I have to loose these left over 20lbs. I hear it's pretty good. My cousin actually did it for probably five months after she had her daughter and loved it. She lost all her pregnancy weight and any extra pre-pregnancy weight on top of that. You can pretty much eat anything that your heart desires. How it works is that every food item is given a point value, and depending on your weight you are allowed to eat so many points a day. For example say you're allowed to eat 25 points a day, then you choose what ever foods you want each day until you get to 25 points. (Sample: Apples are 1 or 2 points depending on size. 4 oz of chicken breast grilled is 4 points. 1 cup cereal is about 3 points and so on) When you go to a meeting they will give you a booklet that explains everything and how to calculate the points of foods. It's the best diet because you can even eat chocolate if you can't live without it, just as long as you count it.

Good luck. Hope this helped

Lena

Hi D.-

I have had to shed a few pounds here and there over the last couple of years (I am fairly fit as well but needed to drop a bit) and I've used Weight Watchers to do it. I did not attend the meetings (although I hear they are very good), but used the online version which is amazing! I think it's $15/mo. to be a member. I can't say enough great things about it if you have a few minutes a day to keep track of your food and exercise the online version.

Good luck & congrats!

It's not a diet per se, it's a new way of accounting for your food intake and being responsible for your health. They don't make you eliminate important foods like some diets and they allow you to have great snacks or splurge when you feel like it. I've used a ton of their recipes which I got from the website as a member and almost all were very good.

I haven't tried WW for nursing moms but most likely will in 3 1/2 mos. when I have my baby. I would say overall it's one of the best ways to lose weight out there.

Hi D.!

I did try WW - both before and after I got pg ith my two kids. For me, it worked much better when I wasn't nursing. I was always starving, because my kids LOVED to nurse! I felt like I wasn't keeping up with the energy I needed to nurse. Also, my body really fought losing weight until I was feeding my kids solids - it just did not want to give it up! Now that my son is not nursing very much, I am able to to WW without adding the extra points, and I am losing weight much easier.

I hope this helps!

I have been a member of WW for the last 2.5 years. I lost 30 pounds before my pregnancy and then gain about 30 during the pregnancy. I have a 6 month old baby boy today. I am back in shape.

Weight Watchers it a great and healthy program. Good for any age or stage, also good for new mother because you are encourage to eat nutriciously.

Good luck.

I'm not a nursing mom...but I can tell you that it works for losing weight but I don't know if it's the best plan for a nursing mom. You need all the nutrients you can get. I would say that just learning about the WW philosophy will help you be aware of what you're eating so you can make better choices. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Hey-
I've done WW before getting pregnant and while nursing both of my sons. It's a great program and easy to do when you are nursing (you just get extra points to eat and need to make sure to get enough calcium). I'd recommend it. Also just so you know breastfeeding will help you lose the weight faster than you could imagine. Most moms I know who breastfed lost all the weight without much effort in 9 or 10 months. That's pretty good. So good job doing what's best for you and your baby!

Weight Watchers worked extremely well for me, although I wasn't nursing, and I wanted to lose about 7 pounds. If you absolutely don't cheat - you must eat the required amount of points, - it should work. You can join on-line for about $15 per month, and the web-site allows you to calculate the points value of everything in your pantry! I didn't have the time to go to meetings etc.
