Any Wonder Bread Moms Out There?

My question is not for the health-conscious-spelt-only, the I-bake-my-own, or the nothing-white-in-my-diet moms. I'm not looking for lectures, so please skip over my question. My question is for the indulgent, give-me-a-PB&J-on-white moms. I couldn't care less about the demise of the Twinkie. I gave that up decades ago. But, I sure am missing my Wonder Bread. I'm peeking through the plastic to see if it looks similar. I have tried a couple of other brands (So far I've tried Sara Lee and something called Healthy Life by Lewis Bakeries), but nothing is quite what I'm wanting. Has anyone else out there found a good substitute? I _am_ looking for the kind that will wad up in a ball. Or smash down nicely on potato chip and bologna sandwich. Hoping that I can narrow down the search instead moving down the bread aisle loaf by loaf which could easily take a year!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the recommendations. I did find an IGA store near a shopping area I frequent, so I will keep that in mind next time I am there. I will also try to find the potato bread and the ironkids breads. I didn't see either of them the last time I was at the grocery store. But, I did try another one of the Lewis Bakeries breads called BUNNY and has a bunny face peeking over the word. That's actually a family nickname for DS, so I took it as a good sign. When DS tasted it he loved it so much he asked if we could buy it again. He uses it to sop up milk... And, today for lunch I sliced a hot mett link in half and fried it up. The bread smushed up perfectly around the fried meat and potato chips. The trademark sign says "Ultra-Soft" and "Made with Whole Grain White." Looks like I finally found a good substitute! Thanks agian for going down this rabbit trail with me. ;o)

Wad up and make a ball? Smash down a potato chip on bologna sandwich? Are you kidding me? I DIDN'T KNOW ANYONE EVER DID THAT BESIDES ME. As kids, we loved making balls out of Wonder bread and I still "hanker" for a bologna sandwich smashed with potato chips on too, though I try to restrict the indulgence........just give me a chance. YOU brought a smile to my day!!!

We like Wonder Bread too. I've found Mrs. Bairds and Sunbeam to be comparable to Wonder.

Yesterday I bought the store brand white bread just because it was on an end cap and it was .77. I though that was crazy but it is actually not bad.

Good luck

Love your post!! I've adopted the IGA brand of white bread. Not as good but what can I say. There'll never be another Wonder Bread!! I have never found another white bread that you can make balls out of and toss them at your mean older brother... sorry, I digress!! lol!!

As for Twinkies, I have to admit, I did indulge once in awhile! Now I'm wishing I would have hoarded them as a child; they would have still been as fresh today as they were then!! lol!!!

Good luck!!

I have grown apart from Wonderbread and love the Orowheat Potato bread (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know they have whole grain...). Other than that, I found a simple white bread at Costco that right now I'm okay with. The crust is a bit thicker I think but other thin crust bread is so insubstantial that I might as well not have bread at all.

By the way, if you are a PB&J mom... freeze your bread (sooner the better). It makes spreading PB on easier and by lunchtime, the bread will thaw. You can keep it longer in the freezer and I promise it will not stale on you. Fridge will dry the bread out so don't do that.

try Orowheat potato bread.
We splurge on on it in the summer for open faced home grown tomato sandwiches. However, I made PB and J with it for for kids one day (figured it was like eating cake for lunch, what the heck). It was fun. they loved it and I won't do it again anytime soon for fear they will start asking for it.

I prefer whole grain, but my daughter likes white, so we compromise and get the Sara LEe whole grain white - looks and feels like white, but has more nutritional value than the paste that is most white bread.

Try the white Smart 16 bread.

I've never eaten Wonder Bread, so I can't compare, but Smart 16 is white and soft and I buy occaisionally for my kids.

I love bologna and processed cheese on Wonderbread. I am confused as to why you are missing the Wonderbread though. Did something happen to it? I have a loaf of Wonderbread and a bag of Wonder Hot Dog Buns on the counter right now. We also buy Smartbread. The kids like it, but I don't.

I'm in the same boat! I also tried Sara Lee - not impressed. This week I'll try another brand. You and me - down the bread aisle loaf by loaf!

This was our kid lunch bread when the sks took sandwiches, before we got the whole family to eat wheat or grain bread. They don't like potato, but I think that has a good flavor, too.

If you can't find something, and I am not a bread connoseiure...how in the world do you spell that? Not that way, anyhow.

ANYhow...I am so mean. I buy the all natural whole grain grainy grain bread for my 7 year old, and she eats it. She's never had a piece of yummy bread in her life. I am sitting her laughing.

Anyhow, my 2 year old has CD and can't have typical breads, and most GF breads are really, really disgusting...until I just bought a new kind. It's called "Goodbye Gluten" and I know you aren't looking for a gf bread, but this bread is SOOOO freaking yummy. It's spongy, almost like sponge cake, airy, like an English muffin, and so squishy and soft and almost moist. The have both white and wheat varieties, and I've only tried the white, and now I want a bologna and potato chip sandwich.

Anyhow, you might give it a shot. I buy it at Hy-Vee, and it comes fresh baked...only has a shelf life of about a week, and costs six bucks for a tiny loaf with 14 slices...anyhow, you might try it. It's really a different and totally decadent bread.

RIP to wonder bread, twinkies, and the chocolate muffins with creamy white stuff inside. And snowballs (the hostess puff thingy's)!

I have found a bread that works but it isnt wonderbread and that is the Sarah Lee Soft bread I think its called. I think I am going to start to get bakery bread now though. Nothing works like Wonder bread works!

If you find a suitable match let me know.

Just wanted to say that I'm a bologna and potato chip sandwhich fan too! LOL We buy the Sara Lee Whole Wheat White. This is coming from a girl who would tell her mom she likes the "good" bread at the grandparents house. They always had white bread and my mom only bought wheat bread. My mom won't let me live that down.

ETA: Ever have a peanut butter and marshmallow cream sandwich? Mmm, sooo good! Man, it's been yeeaars!
