My son has the same problem. We never knew what is was. As he got older it was affecting his ear. It would get red and hot to the touch. We found out that he is alergic to red dye. Anything with red dye in it. Including medicine. I hope this helps

maybe it's the acidity in the food. My son has trouble with oranges and tomatoes- absolutely loves them, but has trouble digesting them, because of the acidity.

Is there anything red in the soups he eats? It sounds to me like the common denominator has red dyes. That could be the problem. Like anything with little ones,it takes a process of elimination period. Good Luck!

All of my children had this reaction to anything w/ red dye in it until they passed the age of 2. My only way of dealing was to cut out all red foods and drinks.

My daughter had that same reaction when she started eating katcup, pizza, etc. It goes away as they get older. As long as nothing else is happening to her, such as having trouble breathing or developing a rash all over, I wouldnt worry about it. When he turns 2 it will probably no happen anymore.

What does your pediatrician say? we found with our daughter, it was the preservatives in foods that bothered her skin,,,not the foods themselves. Have you tried organic foods? Any anything with MSG makes my dauther actually SICK. (that is just one preservative on a list of about 20 that bother her,,but that one is by far the worst and it is in everything, it seems like. Even campbells soup!!) Let me know what your pediatrician said? best to ya, Jenny

Is it just the red foods? My nephews went through something similar and it turned out to be something to do with acid reflux...While my older nephew (now 5) has grown out of it, the little one (2 1/2) still hasn't. He can't drink red fruit punch, have spagettie sauce, and certian red fruits also break him out. Maybe you should ask your doc about this. Good luck!

I have a friend that has the same problem, she cant eat or touch anything with Wheat or yeast. Which is almost every thing!! Look for a product that is wheat and yeast free and give it a try. If the reaction dosent happen then you know you have your culpret. Much luck to you.

My son has lots of allergies and the best advice I can give is to try to isolate it to a certain ingredient. Is it egg in pasta? cheese? I am not sure what is in the red applesauce. Also, my sons allergist said that when the skin is red like that and there are no bumps and it doesnt spread anywhere that it isnt a true allergy and the baby will usually be able to eat the food with no problem. My son(who is allergic to egg, milk, peanut, chicken, and turkey)reacted like that to cinnamon for a while. I stopped giving it to him and about 6 months later or so he was able to eat it with out a problem. If all else fails you can talk to your doctor to get an appointment with an allergist although usually they wont do that for a baby under two because the allergies change after two. Well, I hope that was useful. I know how hard and confusing it can be when dealing with allergies. Just watch for bumps that spread, itching, trouble breathing.... these things are what is harmful. Good luck!

Could it be eczema??? My daughter started having a similar reaction when she was about 2 months old. At first doctors told me it was just drool rash, but eventually they figured out it was eczema. They told me to put hydrocortizone cream on it, and that really helped a lot. I noticed the eczema would get worse if she got certain foods on it like orange juice. My daughter is now 2 and 1/2. The eczema still pops up every now and then but overall its cleared up.

My mom and I have a food allergy to citric acid. My mom can't eat tomatoes. She gets red patches around the outside edges of her mouth. And certain fruits high in citric acid will make my mouth sore. You might try eliminating foods with citric acid and see if it gets any better.
Hope this helps!

it may be an allergy to preservatives put in certain food. I had a preservative allergy when i was a kid,the same foods you listed i had problems with. i eventually grew out of it. So i would suggest taking him to have allergy tests done. I hope this helps!

I think all these ladys are right you should get your child to the doctor. I would even make sure to go when he is broken out this way his doctor can see exactly what you are talking about.
Allergic reactions are nothing to take lightly. My brother-n-law is highly allergic to milk he can not have any thing with milk or whey in it. No milk, bread, butter, and even some types of meatballs and hot dog wennies. It Maybe something he will grow out of but why take the chance with your baby boys life?

I think it would be a good idea for you to get allergy testing done now. The longer you wait to find out what it is the greater chance that you may feed your child something that could do more damage than just turn his skin red. He could have a much more serious reaction. Better safe than sorry.

My daughters still has this problem. But it is with white sauces and citrus fruits. Shes turning three this weekend. Hers goes away in about 10 mins and it does not cause her any discomfort. It used to happen when formula got on her face from her bottle too.

It could be the red dye in the food or the wheat. You should take him to an allergist, your pediatrician should be able to refer you to one.

It is probably the dye in the coloring. Like slapped cheeks almost? My oldest had this, where it really only lasted a little while and then just went away, either that or the acid in the tomato sauce.

Hi there,
It sounds like you have a deep concern and any mom would. 3 of the 4 items that you mentioned sound like they may have some sort of red die in them. I know a person who is allergic to red die and their taste buds swell up perfusely whenever red die touches their mouth so it may be that.
I would get your son to the doctors to get reffered to an allergist ASAP. Allergic reactions are nothing to take lightly. If this is doing this to his skin, imagine what it would do to his lungs and stomach if his body were to try to reject it. I think if you get him to an allergist, it will help pin point what may be bothering him so you know to take notice of his diet. I would keep him on the things that you KNOW don't bother him until you get into the doctors.
I hope this helps.
