Any Recommendation on Sturdy Cloth Diapers with Velcro Closures?

Fuzzi Bunz are the best! Snaps are way better than velcro because baby can't remove them. I also use Bum Genius and Happy Heinys and the BF's are still my favorite. You can do a cloth 21-day trial from www.jilliansdrawers.com and figure out which is your favorite. I completely disagree that prefolds are easier than pockets. They are a breeze. And the laundry really isn't an issue. One load every couple days...done. I think a service is such waste of other resources, not to mention the chemicals they must use to sterilize them. Just my opinions on one of my favorite topics!!

Try http://www.kellyscloset.com/ They have a great assortment of the worthwhile new "reusable" diapers as well as the old fashion cloth ones.

I use the One-Size type as they are cheaper in the long run as you don't need to keep buying a new size every X months. Kelly's Closet is great b/c you can make a "sample pack" with just about any combination of brands.

I have tried the following brands in their One-Size:
* Wahmies One-Size Diapers - the hooks are cool if the baby is really skinny or chunky in the waist, but otherwise, I didn't care for them. They are just like all others in every other aspect.
* Happy Heinys One-Size Diapers - the lining in these is really absorbent and different then the other brands, but they aren't very structured which also means slimer, but the lining tends to roll towards the outside which can make a wet diaper leak
* bumGenius One-Size Diapers - these are the ones I ended up buying (18 last me for 2.5 days) and have been using for a few months. They are easy to use and have extra stiching around the waiste and the legs to keep the inner lining from rolling to the outside, although it adds a bit of bulk, but worth it to me.

The One-size diapers tend to run big as they are supposed to last until the baby is 35lbs, so I waited to start using them until my little one was about 3 months old.

velcro tends to go bad after several uses. Kind of a drag. If she wants to reconsider other closure types, you should check out Fuzzi Bunz. You can adjust the number of liners depending on the soaking potential - overnight vs. during the day... Good for her to be going for it!

Check out www.diaperpin.com for great extensive reviews by brand. A sampler is probably your best bet. Or, do what we did- we started with a diaper service (dy-dee) for 3 months to make sure we liked it and also so we weren't too overwhelmed. Then we bought our own basic prefold diapers from dydee and a few fancy "pocket diapers" from various websites.

I loved them, but would have rather had a diaper service. I got overwhelmed with the amount of laundry.

I used G Diaper covers with chinese prefolds in the insert. It worked really well. If she has a really good washer with sanitary mode then she can wash them herself and save money. It worked out great. At night I used the flushable g-diaper inserts. Go to the g-diaper site to check it out. There even a gdiaper yahoo group that she can ask questions on.

I love the BumGenious one size. You can use them from 8 to 35 lbs. We have been using them on my 3 month old since birth and love them. I have 24, and wash every 2 and a half days, and it isn't too bad. You do have to get special detergent that is brightener and fragrance free, but you don't have to use as much. Also, I would suggest getting a washable diaper pail liner (or two, for when one is being washed) and washable wipes, you just put everything in your diaper pail, and you can wash it all at the same time, so there is no waste.

I used cloth for my daughter. The velcro outer pants leaked for me, and the poo poo came out on her clothes, yuck. I ended up using diaper pins and rubber pants. Good luck!

Hi D. - I love the Thirsties cloth diaper covers. They fit just like a disposable, are affordable, have velcro tabs, and require the basic pre-fold cloth diapers as inserts. I didn't want to spend alot and am very happy with the results. After saying that, I haven't tried anything else besides basic cloth, snappies, and rubber pants. Those also work but I like the Thirsties better.

I just wanted to share one bit of information that I learned about velcro closures from a friend who uses them. She says that the velcro looses it's "stick" over time from all of the washing (other than that, she loves them). I use Fuzzi Bunz and they have the snap closures - no trouble with those, but I think they are probably a lot more expensive than the velcro diapers. My suggestion is to maybe go with the less expensive diapers when the baby is small because they don't use the small ones for very long, but then for the larger size, get Fuzzi Bunz or something that does not have the velcro. My soon-to-potty-train baby has been wearing the same size Fuzzi Bunz for almost 2 years and I plan to sell them because they are still in good shape - they are very sturdy diapers and they have been more than worth the cost.

Ok, the options are almost endless so it can get pretty confusing.... BUT here's a way to simplify it. Do you want to go cheap or convenient? If you want to go cheap then just buy some chinese prefolds and white prowraps, that's what we used for our son and now on our daughter. You just place the prefold in the wrap and velcro it on. Of you want to spnd some money and get the easiest most convenient system out there I would get BumGenius diapers (they are velcro closures but fold down with a snap so they fit from birth through potty training). Although I don't know how well they hold in breastfed baby poop as my friend who uses them didn't get them until her son was 9mo old. Prowraps, and bummis have double gussets to REALLY hold in those runny poops (we've NEVER had a leak)! good luck!

Velcro is convenient and quick, but does not last as well as snap closures. I highly recommend getting plenty of Hemp inserts for these diapers as they are anti-microbial and super absorbent. With cloth, the more natural the fiber the better the absorbency and wear.

I know you have received lots of great responses, but I have to reiterate the awesomeness of prefolds and covers! The bum genius are really nice, but for me, stuffing them is just IRRITATING! And they're really expensive unless you get them second-hand (check out diaperswappers.com for a great trading/buying/selling community!). So if the budget is tight and she's not scared of the "old fashioned" diapers, prefolds and covers are the way to go. To me, they're actually easier than the pocket style diapers.

Another way to go is with fitted diapers and covers (by the way, covers can be made of PUL or wool... my favorite!). Fitteds are basically like an old-fashioned prefold, but they're shaped and they have elastic or snaps or ties, and most wool is usually used as pants. Wool can be used again and again without washing because of its antimicrobial properties, but it requires special care (hand wash/line dry and lanolizing about once every few weeks to a month).

If your SIL has time and money, she's going to get addicted to cloth... It's so cute! If she knits or crochets, she can make her own wool pants, and that cuts costs a LOT.

gDiapers are awesome. I use them on my 3rd and 4th children. I too just started "going green". They have velcro closures and plastic liners to keep the cover dry. They come with the disposable/biodegradable liner in each kit, but because that gets really pricey, I use the cloth diapers instead. They come in S, M, and L. Check Ebay out for deals on new kits, or if you have a Whole Foods market nearby, they have the kits available in all sizes. Good luck! (BTW, about 3 months ago one of the news stations even did a piece on these diapers, very eco-friendly.)

Just wanted to let you know that gdiapers are great because you can flush them down the toilet and they biodegrade...BUT if baby pees a lot or makes a messy poop, the wetness goes through to the outside and the "explosions" would be very messy. Plus the liner stains. I would suggest gdiaper inserts since she won't have much time to wash, especially in the beginning, and instead of using the gdiaper cover, use a waterproof, washable cover. I like the Bummis and Prorap--the Prorap has a laminate liner to wipe clean, but the Bummis laminate liner is in the middle (it's still washes easily). The Thirsties run a bit large. Those are the ones I've used. They all have velcro closures and run about $10 each. The Bumgenius diapers are expensive, like $18 each, and have to be washed after one use--so you need a lot of them. The wraps can be washed after several uses. (I've been looking into all these options myself recently and had to share with you!)

If you want cloth, get your SIL the prefolded diapers (3-ply is good, 6-ply will be really thick). You can easily use these in the diaper wraps I just mentioned. My husband read that cloth diapers aren't really as green as people think because of all the detergent, cleaners, washing, and drying impact on the environment. I can send you the article if you're interested in reading it (let me know), but no pressure whatever you decide. :-) I've been potty training my 14 month old for months and am using cloth now so he feels the wetness, but I wish I knew about the gdiaper inserts and waterproof wraps when he was a baby. I would have done that (the gdiaper inserts feel dry on baby by the way).

I have many brands some with snaps, but I really like happy heinys velcro. The pocket diapers are easy to use and don't forget extra inserts.
