Any One Else Had to Deal with PUPPP While Pregnant?

So I was diagnosed with PUPPP (pruritic uticarial pupules and placques of pregnancy). Severe itching, burning, and rashes on stomach, chest, thighs, arms, sides, back... The Dr. prescribed Dermasmooth which hasn't helped much. I'm going to loose my mind if I don't get some relief and sleep soon.

Anyone else go through this? What helped? And how long did it last? And if several weeks, how did you cope?

They say it may last until after the birth of the baby. I have 10 more weeks to go. I don't know how I'm going to make it! =(

What can I do next?

I developed this two days after delivery with my second child...luckily I escaped it during the preganancy. Can you use topical benadryl while pregnant? Check with your doctor first, because I don't know if it is bad for the baby, but that was the only thing that helped me. They sell an over the counter Benadryl gel that calmed down the itching for about an hour at a time...long enough for me to go to sleep, etc.

Hang in there...I feel your pain.

Oh your poor thing, PUPPS SUCKS!!!! I too was diagnosed with it at 30 weeks and I am sorry to say that it pretty much lasted through the rest of the pregnancy :( I actually went on a round of steroids at 32 weeks and it cleared it up right away for a few weeks, but then it came back again (way less severly), and I know have a 6 month old who is perfectly healthy, so if you need the steroids, I wouldn't worry about it too much. PUPPS is not only gross but torturous with the itching!!! Anyway, I found the only thing that really worked to help with the itching was Benadryl (tablets not the cream) and Caladryl (the pink ointment), I would just lather that stuff all over and repeat every couple hours...The Benadryl helped to let me sleep some at night....Good luck and just know that it will be over soon enough - but it does suck while it lasts :(

I don't think my problem is related, and even if it is mine is MUCH more severe, but my midwife told me to take fish oil capsules (like what they tell you to take for high cholesterol) and it really helps with the itching. Anyway, it can't hurt to try because some research says that the omega 3's in fish oil are great for infant brain development, and unlike eatting fish there is no mercury in the capsules.

I have never heard of this and I am so sorry you have it. It sounds just awful! I did get some minor rashes/burning around my breast area when I was pregnant (it was uncomfortable for me, but very minor compared to what you're going through). I put Vitamin A&D ointment on them and it helped a little. Just a thought, maybe soaking in an oatmeal bath, like they recommend for chicken pox, would provide some relief. Or a baking soda bath, that really helped my husband with the itching when he had chicken pox at 36. You might check with your doctor before doing that, though. I'm sure oatmeal is safe, but I don't know what baking soda does to you. I will pray that you find some relief!

I am so sorry to hear of your discomfort. I did not go through anything like this when I was pregnant 6 months ago however, one of my very close friends who is due next week, mentioned to me that her feet iched so bad for 2 weeks straight that she could not sleep at night and she literally scratch the skin off her feet during the night. One of the things she did that helped a bit was soak her feet in whole milk for some reason that can be very soothing? She said that eventually it went away on it's own so not to worry it will lift soon!!

Take Care,

T.

Ps Have you tried rubbing Aquafor all over? This is an over the counter vasaline type cream that is very safe to use even on children.

I too had this. Cold showers and the doctor said I could use Benadryl once a day(ask you doctor). It lasted until delivery, but they say you can only get it with the first pregnancy so hopefully I wont get it this time. I got it the last 3weeks. Aveeno anti-itching lotion, and Calydryl worked some, but it was the cold showers that worked best. Good luck!!!
