Any Moms with Babies on Enfamil Nutramigen?

Hi there, I have a 5.5 month old son who was put on nutramigen because of horrendous belly pain. We noticed immediate relief once we started him on it and I am so thankful. I was wondering if anyone else used this with there babies and if so, when did you try to wean them off it? did you ever try regular formula? He is now eating certain stage 1 baby foods without any issues and i have to wonder if he has outgrown his belly problems. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks so much for all the advice! I was nervous that if i kept zoren on the nutramigen i would somehow create a dependency for it...all the responses really helped me out. I just did not know what the normal was..It is very expensive but you cannot put a price on a happy baby in my opinion. Thanks again!

I transitioned my daughter off of Nutramigen around 7 months. I switched her to Nestle Good Start which is similar to Nutramigen because the proteins are more broken down, but it's cheaper. I first gave her one bottle a day of Nestle and the others were Nutramigen. Then I switched to 2 bottles the next week. She did fine and I didn't notice any problems. She's now 10 months, and I'm doing the same slow process to switch her to a regular, stage 2 formula.

My middle son was on it from the age of 4 months till he was a year old because of colic and gas. I would recommend to keep him on it as long as possible. If you do start to wean back I would wait till he is almost a year old. Enjoy the peacefullness.

Hi, our first child did well with a much lower priced soy formula but our daughter was put on nutramigen when she was two months old due to stomach issues. We called it "liquid gold". But since it worked complete magic we never tried another formula but that. Nutramigen kept her tummy so calm and she was so much happier. We weaned her off of it at one year and on to regular milk with not a single problem. It was amazing.

I have had two children that were put on nutramigen at young ages as well. Yes, both of my kids now ages 3 & 4 were able to transition well off of nutramigen. I did it gradually and not until 10-12 months of age b/c of the degree of problems they were having with their digestion. What is going on with your 5.5 month old in terms of digestion? Was there blood in the stool or an allergy?
Nutramigen is a lifesaver in my opinion, despite its expense!

is enfamil nurtamigen similar as soy formula? i have no idea what it is :o) i breast fed my son all the way. it is new to me.
maybe u can try wean him off to soy formula instead of regular formula? because the mothers in respond mention that nutramigen is expensive. ekkk. soy formula may helps.

Hi, My son was put on Nutramigen for severe reflux, it also worked wonders. We kept him on it until we switched him to milk at 1 yo. He currently is on Lactaid becuause they believe the reflux was aggrivated by the lactose intolerance. If you didn't already know, some insurances will cover it if your dr. can finagle the diagnosis, it is really expensive so our dr was able to help us out with it. That helped tremendously with the cost! Hope this has helped. BTW my son is now 2.5 and doing great with his reflux under control with meds.

K., my now 10 year old daughter (whom was my first) was put on Nutramigen as early as 3mos old. I was unable to stick with breast feeding for a number of reasons I won't detail here. I remember it being expensive 10 years ago, I'm afraid to know what the price is now. But I started putting my daughter on 2% milk when she started taking solid foods. I would mix a little powdered rice in to make it more formula textured (a suggestion my doctor gave me) She did fine and was off the "Champagne of Formulas" by her 1st birthday.(Cha-ching!!) The Pediatrician also recomended the 2% milk as opposed to the whole milk because there is a lot of unnecessary fat content. Children develope all the fat cells there bodies will contain thoughout their life, in the first 2 years. So keeping fat content low in that develpemental stage is critical. It will decrease the risk of obesiety later in life. Hope this helps.

Hello,

My son (now 6 yrs old) was switched to Nutramigen when he was small due to his SEVERE colic. It worked wonders! I kept him on that until he was off the bottle (at 1 yr old) - we switched him to whole milk & he HATED IT - but our dr. said water & juices are fine as long as he's getting his vitamin d from other sources (which he was) and eventually when he turned about 3 he'd finally drink milk & loves it now at 6.

If I were you, again only just my opinion, I'd keep him on it until you're ready to get him off bottles all together. We took bottles away by 1 yr old. and with the bottles went the formula. Definitely don't switch back anytime soon - the special formula is working - continue to use it!

My son ate all his baby food (stage 1 & 2) while on the formula & had no problems at all what-so-ever. The formula is just easier to digest for babies, so it won't get all 'chemistry set' on your son when adding food to his diet.

Good luck and best wishes
from another SAHM of 2 boys (6 & 3.5 yr old)

I have had three babies on either Alimentum or Nutramigen. My first two were on it for the full year, my third is 5 months old, and I'm guessing he'll be on it for the full first year as well. You can try weaning whenever you want - each baby is different. Just make sure when you do it, you do it gradually, like 1/3 new formula, 2/3 Nutramigen for the first week, then 1/2 and 1/2, then 2/3 new and 1/3 Nutramigen, etc... Good luck! I tried Enfamil A/R when my youngest was about 2 months old, and halfway through his first mixed bottle of Nutramigen and new, he was screaming in pain.
