My dream has alwasy been to write books (mostly childrens books but also I have been recently working on a moms book as well) and getting them published. I have also always wanted to own a really great comfy book store/coffee shop (but now there are so many starbucks, barnes & nobles, etc) I don't think I would be able to make any money that way. Even our local christian bookstore has its own coffee shop. So my question is I have these things written down but don't know what to do with them. Self publishing or putting up a bunch of money myself is not an option. Anyone know? Thanks

Hi J.,

Great dream! Not sure I am qualified since I am a Dad, but as a psychologist and a writer and speaker, might be able to offer a unique angle. Instead of doing the book forst-maybe setting up a web site and doing a free blog on your topic which should increase your email list and platform. Next, would be to offer a paid e course (very inexpensive so you gets lots of people) or an inexpensive membership site on your topic (I did a membership site for stress management for www.stompstressaway.com to help people deal with stress in an affordable, convenient, and effective way). Once you have your email list, platform, and paid members, then you could offer the book (discount for members) and follow up with your second book, etc. Hope this helps and feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Best of luck and success!

When I was younger I love writing books. If I ever do make a book it would be the Memoirs of an imperfect mother and wife or something. but for a children's book, I would love for my kids to help me! but i say if you want it girl do it ! My children love Dr. Seuss. We have his whole collection !

I have been a writer for over 12 years now as a freelacer (I work for multiple newspapers and magazines). I am currently working on my first novel (around 550 pages). I would recommend trying your hand at writing articles - pay is decent and you earn clout as a writer.

I got to read Still Alice when it was just type-written on paper and before it was published (a friend wrote it - it is currently a NY Times bestseller: http://www.stillalice.com/)

My greatest advice: Write what you know, get some experience as a paid writer and then go for it! Many books start out self-published and some are picked up by big publishing houses.

I believe it wouldn't hurt to compile some things, make lots of copies and then send them out to any and all publishing houses you can find. I hear that's how Stephen King and the woman who wrote the "Twilight" books got it done...

That's all I got. I wish you loads of luck!

A friend of mine has been published. Check out her website: www.hillaryhomzie.com. On the About Hillary page she has advice for writers.

Focus on one story for now, and work on it the best you can.

For the childrens book, try showing a teacher or a school librarian and asking for feedback---they know what kids like reading, and they know trends in children's books.

When you are happy with it, send it out to a lot of places, but keep in mind that many authors wait years to get their first work published.
Once you get ONE thing published... it's different.
I just saw an old interview with a famous author (Ursula k. LeGuin) and she had done an experiment after she was famous, where she submitted stories under false names, and they were rejected. Then she submitted them under her own name, and they were quickly accepted!
