Any Little Teeth Grinders Out There...?

My son will be 7 mo. old on friday. Last week he discovered that he can grind his teeth. He's had the top 2 and bottom 2 teeth for some time now and eventhough he's been well aware that they are there grinding hasn't been an issue. At first it bothered me because I can't stand the sound it makes when he does it, but I assumed he'd do it for a couple days and move on to something new. Thats what he's done with most everything else, he'lll be really into it for a few days maybe even a week, until he discovers something else he can do and moves on. Unfortunetly this teeth grinding thing seems to be lingering, and he has actually chiped one of his teeth! When he starts (first thing when he wakes up) I try to give him something else to chew on. I've tried hard things, soft things, squishy things, he'll take it for a minute then right back to grinding. We go to the pediatrician on Friday for our next well-child check-up and I plan on speaking to the doctor about it, but I was just wondering if any of you had a teeth grinder that was so young and what you may have done to solve this problem. Any advice is greatly appriciated. Thank you!

What can I do next?

My 14 month old does this and it drives me nuts. She has 13 of her teeth now and she can really get them grinding!! The sound is worse then nails on a chalk board.
Just keep giving him something else to munch on when he does this, I think the vibrations it causes feels good when they are teething. They make a vibrating star teether toy that my daughter loves and it usually works as a good distractor. I also noticed when I react to it she does it more!! So try not to make a big deal out of it otherwise it could just become a game. Hopefully your doctor has other ideas for you.

Your situation is almost identical to mine...my daughter started to do the teeth grinding thing when she got her top and bottom teeth and it makes me crazy since the noise is so irritating! She's now 12 months old and only seems to do it when she is just cutting a new tooth. I think she finds it soothing. I try to give her the Hyland's teething tablets (can find in Fred Meyer's natural section) more regularly at these times and also she LOVES frozen green beans to nibble on.

Good luck...just think of all the other noises he could be making that are more annoying! :)

My daughter did the same thing...for about 6 months! I hated the sound it made and was concerned about her teeth and her hurting herslef. Fortunatley, they are baby teeth and they do outgrow it. Sometimes it takes a while! My pediatrician told me to do exactly what you are...offer her something else to chew on when she starts to grind them. Also, not to make a "big deal" out of it. If she started to notice that she received a special response when she did this, she might do it more often.
Good luck, and hang in there!
