Any Ideas on How to Get Rid of Thrush??

My daughter is almost 5 months, and we have been battling with thrush for over two months now. We've tried pretty much everything her pediatrician has prescibe and it still keeps coming and going. I'm a nursing mom, whose milk supply is dwindling because of this little problem. Does anyone have any ideas?? Please help...thanks

What can I do next?

Thank you everyone for all your input......all the antibiotics, creams, diflucan and the violet stuff, i've used, but you guys had some great input and new ideas for me to try with her and myself. I will keep my fingers crossed and hope one of the treatments works!! thanks again!

try giving her a little bit of water and very frequently clean her mouth with a warm rag and talk to your ob doc because trush in a baby is like a baby yeast infection and maybe it is coming from your milk and you need to be on a antibiotic or it may be something you're eating but i would first see your ob doc

I know this is a really old one but I had to respong to it. You know Doctors around here (Wyoming) hardly recognize yeast as a problem in children. I have an 8 year old son who had so much trouble with thrush as a baby. I wanted to cry! It made him very fussy as well.

I read a book called "The Yeast Connection in Women". This book does not only touch on Women and yeast, it tells about all people and yeast. When we take atibiotics it kills our good bacteria. When we do not have alot of good bacteria yeast is allowed to grow in our body. In babies it grows in the mouth because it is very wet and warm and also because of the milk. Yeast grows in a warm environment and is fed by starchy things or sweets, including milk or formula.

We tried the Gentian Violet, Diflucan, the white mouth rinse, all that stuff. What a battle! If you get a chance and find the book it will tell you what to do, if you can find a Doctor that supports the theories. My son is still prone to sores in his mouth and yeast infections. He is big enough now that I can give him supliments from the health food store called "Yeast Cleanse". I wish that Doctors would recognize this around here because in South Dakota I had such a wonderful Doctor that helped me so much. My son was prescribed 11 days of Diflucan. One dose every other day. It was liquid as he was really young at the time. We did this three times and finally we were without thrush. I also gave him the powdered baby Acidophilus from the health food store. For Mommy, yogurt, no sugar, bread or anything sweet. I pretty much at vegetables for three months. It was great for my figure!

Make sure if you have a pacifier you wash it frequently. Use a cool rag not a warm one to rinse your nipples. You can actually pass this back and forth between you and your child if you are not carefull. You can also give your child cool or cold milk. That will slow down the growth of the yeast in her mouth. We also were told to rinse the little mouth with water after each feeding.

I know this is so long ago but if you have not had results I feel for you. Thrush is so misserable for both your baby and you.

My son had thrush too really bad and his pediatrician prescibed Nystatin oral suspension, usp . It got rid of my sons thrush very quickly. He had it soooo bad that his tongue had no pink on it and neither did his cheeks and he had it on his lips but i swear by this stuff. Also dont forget to apply it to your nipples too otherwise u will keep spreading it back to your baby! Hope that helps!

Talk with your ob-gyn. They have an ointment that you can put on your nipples that will take care of any thrush that you have. you are probably cross infecting eachother. By clearing your daughter up, you aren't treating the whole problem. SHe has probably infected your nipples, so they need to be treated to. I also had this problem with both of my kids.

Have you tried gentian violet (the purple stuff)? How about eating lots of yogurt (live culture)? You do need to treat both of you. Get some acidolphilous capsules & put some in your daughter's mouth & also on you nipples, as well as taking it yourself.
The antibiotics have probably killed off all the good bacteria in your bodies & you need to get that replaces. Keep nursing, it will get better!!!!

D.,
My daughter & I also had thrush a lot during her first 3 months. We tried the prescription medicines, but it actually took a combination effort to really get over it. I used Monistat cream on my nipples and gave her the prescription Nystatin drops. I also rinsed my nipples with vinegar after every feeding (sounds wierd, but it helps). We got some baby acidophilus powder from the Good Food Store and I added that to any bottle she had and took it myself with water. BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT GIVING YOUR BABY ACIDOPHILUS---MAKE SURE YOU GET POWDER THAT IS FORMULATED FOR INFANTS, AND DO NOT GIVE HER ANYTHING ELSE. With all of that, we got over it.
Hope this helps! I know how miserable it is, so good luck. And keep feeding & pumping as much as you can to keep your milk supply up.

My daughter and I just got over thrush. Sometimes it can take a lot of time to get rid of it! Make sure you scrub any pacifiers, toys, or bottles, anything she puts in her mouth with hot soap water. You gotta scrub it really well to get any yeast particles off. Gentilian Violet worked well for my daughter, and I used lotrimen cream on myself. Just make sure she has a bib if you use gentilian violet because it is very very purple! But make sure you're treating her and yourself consitently and simultaneously or you'll just keep passing it back and forth between you. Also, drink 3-5 cups of Mother's Milk tea (found in most natural and organic food stores) to keep your milk supply up. Sometimes pumping milk is more comfortable and less painful than feeding, just make sure to wash anything that comes into contact with your breasts very very well. Good luck!

what is your dr giving her?
i know some dr's say this isn't possible.. but some say it is..
you breast feed right? is it possible you have it on your nipples? have you treated your nipples?
have you tried pumping and giving her a bottle to see if it stays away? proving or disproving the nipple theory..
i'm not sure, can that stuff be in the ducts as well?
good luck,,

what does your dr say when it keeps coming back? how many times are you talking?
