Any Feedback on "Yaz"?

I'm thinking about getting back on the pill, but I'm nervous about how it affects my mood and my stomach (I used to get really sick to my stomach when I took it--even at night). I've seen the commercials for Yaz singing "we're not gonna take it!" and promising no bloating, no mood swings, all good stuff, and, of course, no pregnancy. Anyone try it yet? Does it work any better or worse on PMS symptoms than other birth control pills? Any wierd side effects?

EDIT: I know there was a previous request made just like mine back in October, but I can't seem to locate the original request... not sure what categories it was filed under. The recent requests page only goes back to 10/29. If anyone has the link to it, it'd be really helpful! Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks to Lara's quick response, I found my way to the last request of the same nature (although the answers are still so confusing! great for some! horrible for others!). If anyone else is looking for the original request it was filed under "Health & Medical >>Other Health & Medical"

I had a friend on Yaz and it did the total opposite of what they advertise. She went into depression and was VERY moody...believe me! I had been using the Nuva Ring and mentioned I didn't have those symptoms. She switched to the NuvaRing and withing a few days of getting off of Yaz she was back to her normal self. She is not the only person I've heard with these same symptoms. The NuvaRing was WONDERFUL!! You only change it once a month and it's not as bad as you may think. I was a little nervous about using it, but after I did, I LOVED it!

I have not tried it. Although here is a website, askapatient.com I had checked out because I am taking Microgestin FE & may switch to something different. It has women's actual thoughts, side effects & personal experiences on several different bc's along with other prescriptions, etc..You'll have to type in Yasmin though rather than Yaz when you do the search..Then just look at what responses state Yaz..Most were negative, I do not intend on trying Yaz, but I think everyone is different..Best of luck..

A friend of mine just went off of Yaz because it made her crazy. She had terrible cramps the first period (so much that she couldn't get out of bed), and felt like she was PMSing constantly. She did just fine on Yasmin though!

My doctor had me try Yaz after giving birth to my 2nd child. I never went back on the pill after my first child, so it had been about 5 years since being on something. I've been on it about 6 months now and I guess I'm the odd-ball. I bloat, I get moody, and I still am not used to how my periods are. I spot for like 3-4 days, then have a couple heavier days, then spot again. It's never real heavy, but it's like a guessing game with all the spotting. My refills are up next month, so I think I'm going to ask them if I can try something else. This just isn't cutting it for me. The pill I was previously on was Ortho TriCyclene. I had no pms, no bloating, very predictable periods (3 heavier days. period.) The only thing I noticed every month was my breasts would swell and be a little tender. I can live with that.

I have never been able to tolerate birth control well...but after 2 years of extrutiating migraines and being sick of antidepressants for PMDD, I decided to give it a try. I had severe heart palpitations on it, my heart felt weird and achy when I wasn't having them. Also I was more moody than usual, like I had mild PMS instead of PMDD...so that wasn't bad for me I guess. The other issue I had was that I couldn't sleep well on it. And I did feel sick to my stomach and have diarrhea, which is rare for me.

So after one cycle I decided to try the NuvaRing. My ob/gyn does not want me to get a period (she didn't on Yaz either). I've had MINIMAL side effects on the ring. It's great. She wants me to keep it in for 3 weeks, then instead of taking it out to get a period just switch it out for another one. I noticed side effects right away on Yaz but not on the ring. My ob/gyn said sometimes the Ring is better because all of the hormones are emitted down there instead of in your stomach from a pill. Oh--also they said the Progesterone base is lower in the Ring than in Yaz. So the estrogen is the same but with lower progesterone.

I'd say give Yaz a try because everyone is differnt. Were you warned not to take Potassium supplements with it? I have been taking them for years, I think that may be why I had the heart side effects with it. The progestin in it can raise your blood potassium levels if you take supplements or certain medications. It can increase your risk for heart attack. So be careful on that one.

If you don't like it, consider the Ring. We'll see what happens in 2 weeks when I'm supposed to get a period and I don't...I've never tried anything like it before.

Good luck!!

I started taking Yaz over a year ago & LOVE it. I don't have any weird side effects, but I honestly can't say if it helps with your mood. I think I'm just getting moodier the older I get. :) What is DOES do is shorten the amount of days you suffer. My period only lasts 3-4 days and is very light. I did nothing for my cramps, but I'm still a fan.

I think it all comes down to marketing. The pill companies are trying to get you to ask your doctor for a pill by name but really it's about finding a pill you feel good on. Many of the qualities they advertise are side effects of the pill in general.

Hi M.,

I've been on Yaz for almost a year now, and I have no complaints. I was on Yazmin before, and would have pretty bad mood swings around that time of the month, and much worse cramps. Now I seriously hardly notice it. Periods are shorter too. Everybody is different, but I really like using Yaz....no bad side effects for me!

I've been taking Yaz for 2 months. I'm not sure if I want to continue. I tried it out because I haven't been on any birth control for over 2 years (my husband had a vasectomy after our last child was born). I was having bad depression and long heavy periods (for me) and you know, all that other stuff, whenever it was around that time of the month. So, My first month on Yaz I was sick to my stomach a little bit everyday. They give you a warning that it can cause that for a few months but to keep taking the pill. I think all of my symtoms are better but now I'm second guessing myself about taking medication when I don't really need it for it main use. So, I would say, it works, but I have a whole other worry involved with it. Any advice for me?

Hey M. I was the one who left the last question about Yaz. I did take it for a while and noticed that it made me sick to my stomach and dizzy and I have stopped taking it. But it does work for some people. I was just not the lucky one.

Good luck!

Hi M.,
I currently take Yaz and have been very pleased so far. I have been on it for about 4 months now. I did not have any nausea issues but I have never had menstral problems. I have also never had bad PMS, but I started experiencing bad mood swings right before my period about 7 months ago. However, my previous job was extremely stressful and I think that was affecting me. When I switched to Yaz I was in the process of looking for a new job. I do think Yaz helped with my mood swings, but it took about 2 months for it to take effect. I also switched jobs last month and it is a lot less stressful so far. So this month has been the best so far.
Also, have you ever considered trying Yoga? I found that it has done wonders for my stress and mood and overall health. I usually do it twice a week.
I hope any of the above helps.

Hi M.!
There's a request that was posted on 10-20-07 that asks a similar question. I responded to it along with a lot of others. You might find what you are looking for there. Good luck on your search for the right b.c. :)
