Any Advice on How to Get a Grant or Loan for a Single Mother to Start a Business

Have you tried your local SBA (small business association)?
Also check with the local community college, they usually have a business teacher who you could meet with for help.
There is help out there for women, specifically with financing. Also when we opened our business checking account, they offered some small financing and a credit card.

If you are in the East Bay, the Oakland Business Development Center is totally geared for this, and has lots of resources. You can find them at http://www.obdc.com/

Your local chapter of SCORE is also geared for this, again east bay info: http://www.eastbayscore.org/ They have workshops galore.

Cal State also has a small biz center: http://www.eastbaysbdc.org/

Go for it! I help small business owners everyday, and I have seen the beauty and benefits of running your own business. Just not ready to do it myself :-)
