Amniotic Fluid

I was called and told today after getting my 3d ultrasound that it looks like I have excess amniotic fluid and to come back in 1-2 weeks for another u/s. They didn't give me any other information but that. Of course now after researching this b/c I have never had this problem I am really scared. My dr was supposed to call me back and he didn't, it is now way after hours. I know I should not stress but I really can't help it and am so sad that something is wrong w/the baby. I read that 20 % of cases are associated w/birth defects. Would they have seen some of these defects at my 20 week anatomy scan? I even had it done at the high-risk perinatal center b/c my drs office only had early AM appointments and I needed a PM one... would they have picked up things like stomach problems, anacephaly and intestinal blockages? I am worried sick over this and trying hard not to think about it b/c when I do I just start crying. I just want my baby to be ok :(

What can I do next?

First off, (((hugs)))

To answer your question, YES they can spot all sorts of things in an ultrasound and when they do, you know it. They found an ovarian cyst in my daughter at her 20 week ultrasound and I knew something was up because all of a sudden I had four doctors in there looking at my ultrasound trying to identify it. So, if there was a problem with the baby's development they would have told you today when they said you have excess amniotic fluid.

As for the excess fluid, this happened to a friend of mine before I knew her. I don't know all the details, but I do know that she got HUGE and would have to wear one of those belly support straps. She also had to go in for fetal monitoring three times a week. Her daughter is fine, no problems at all. I can't remember if she had to have a c-section, I think she did, but I don't know if it was because of the amniotic fluid.

Hopefully your doctor will call today and settle your fears.

Best Wishes!
N.

Hey Robyn, don't worrie until you have something to worry about, worring is not good for your baby, They probably told you to come back in 2 weeks, because you will be 2 weeks furture along, and they will probably be able to get a better picture, there maybe nothing wrong with your baby, sometimes the position on the baby makes it hard to see things, I would think if your DR. had real concerns he would have orderd other tests for you in the mean time. I don't know if you believe in God or not, but God loves your baby more than you do, just pray and go to your next appointment and see wht the DR. says. This day and age they can do so much to ensure a healthy baby, will pray for your little one and you, keep me posted if that is OK. J.

Doctors just suck like that huh?! I am sorry that you have to be so stressed out....poor thing! The way I see it is; If there were "complications" due to the excess fluid then your Doctor would have said a little more then he did or at least make sure you were back in the office ASAP! So that right there tells me you should take some deep breaths and relax a little bit.
I myself am a firm believer in saying "THE SQUEAKY WHEEL GETS THE OIL!" LOL! Call that office and bug them into telling you something! Let them know how upset you are that your Doctor would give you something like this think about and stew on, while waiting for a return call from him. Express your fears to them and plead for the Doctor to call you back! I would call every day....twice a day! :0)
It's to bad that having so much technology and education in this day and age can cause so much unwarranted stress and questions that the woman in centuries before us had no idea of. Stay strong and breathe. Your baby will be just fine.

Peace~Love~Light

Hi robyn, sorry to see you stressed out for something that most probably it is not significant otherwise your provider will reeval you sooner but it is sad that they did not give you enough info to make you worry.let me tell you about excess fluid or polyhydramnios which is rare maybe 2 in 100 pregnant women.in 25 years of OB practice I have only seen 3 cases related to fetal abnormalaties but mostly seen as complication due to gestational diabetes.have you been cheked for this ?

Polyhydramnios is diagnosed with ultrasound. Medical experts do not fully understand what causes this condition. In 2 out 3 cases, the cause is not known. Here are two of the best-known causes:

Birth defects in the baby that affect the ability to swallow. Normally, when the fetus swallows, the level of amniotic fluid goes down a bit. This helps to balance out the increase in fluid caused by fetal urination.
Heart defects in the baby.
Women with diabetes are at increased risk for polyhydramnios. But they have fewer complications from polyhydramnios than women without diabetes.

Women with mild polyhydramnios may have few symptoms. Women with more severe cases may have discomfort in the belly and breathing problems. That's because the buildup of fluids causes the uterus to crowd the lungs and the organs in the belly.
What You Can Do
The best thing you can do is to go to all your prenatal care appointments. Your health care provider can monitor the size of your belly and how much amniotic fluid is in your womb. If you have a problem, your provider can take steps to help prevent complications in you and your baby

If your health care provider thinks you might have polyhydraminos, you will probably need extra monitoring during your pregnancy. About half the time, polyhydramnios goes away without treatment. Other times, the problem may be corrected when the cause is addressed. For example, treating high blood sugar levels in women with diabetes often lowers the amount of amniotic fluid.please do not worry at this stage until you go and talk to your provider.relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and good luck....keep me posted and let me know.

I totally feel for you! First of all - try not to worry. I know it's hard not to, but we were told the same thing and our baby boy is healthy as can be! Of course I was all freaked out too and started google-ing it and everything and was all depressed about it, but my worry was for nothing. I'm sure it is the same for you! If there was something wrong they would see something on the ultrasound or order more tests. Every technician that did our ultrasound would tell us the same thing - that there was excess fluid. But it was no biggie. Good luck to you :)

It seems that Docs can be so insensitive!! Hugs for you first and then think about this. Your baby is what it is whether you worry or not. You have all the numbers on your side and lots of prayer. Relax and talk to your little one. Tell the baby (and yourself) that no matter what, your baby is perfect and all will be well.

My twins were a problem inuetero according to the doctors and I was on bedrest and went into labor early even though they were giving me stuff. The docs came in and out and mumbled and worried but I looked inward and knew all was fine.

You are in my prayers.

Robyn,

I'm sorry you haven't heard from your doctor yet. When I was pregnant with my second son I had excess fluid and I was told it was a normal thing and not worry about it. My son was born with out any birth defects.I wouldn't worry to much ,but I would get an appointment to double check with your doctor. I hope everything turns out ok!!

Robyn,

I don't have any advice but just wanted to give you a hug. ((HUG)).

The internet can be a curse just as much as it is helpful. Try, although I know it will be hard, but try to get some rest and talk to your Dr. as soon as you can in the morning so you can put your mind at ease. I'm sure everything is fine.
