Am I Worrying over Nothing?

my daughter is 5 1/2 months old and she sleeps on her side in her crib. The problem is she likes to sleep with this beany baby duck smushed up against her face while she sucks her paci. I worry about SIDS with the duck but every time I try to take it she wakes up angry. What should I do?

What can I do next?

i would take away the duck just to make sure it does not harm her in her sleep. she will get used to not being there. about her sleeping on her side, when they are the age to start rolling around on their own they are usually safe from sids.
dont' feel mean for taking away the duck, it is for her safety, you will have to do this type of thing again in her life.

I know how you feel. My daughter spent a few weeks in the NICU and they always slept her on her tummy! So when we returned home she only slept good on her tummy. So I will admit she slept on her tummy since she came home from the hospital. She is now a year old and still sleeps on her tummy! Does your baby have good head control? I would always make sure with my little one that there was nothing else around her. That she could move her head easily if she needed to. You know your little one. If it is preventing her from breathing it is probably not good. But it sounds like she is pretty safe. And it doesn't sound like the toy is something your little one can get wrapped up in. That is what my pediatrician would warn about, bedding that the baby could get wrapped up in. She is also getting to an age where it doesn't matter as much as it did 3 months ago. Take care!

Dear B. - my son was born on 8/11/07 - he also likes to sleep with his face smooshed...i wouldn't worry too much since they are rolling quite a bit but you could also get a breathable bumper that they can squish their face against...they sell them at Babies R Us.

Good luck,

L.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about SIDS. Most stuffed animals are "breathable" unless made from vinyl or something of that nature. At your daughter's age, she should have good head control and can move her head away from the ducky if she starts to have problems breathing.

My DD always has something smashed up against her face. If it isn't one of her animals it is her blankie. The one time I took them both away, she rolled to the side of her crib and grabbed her bumper and pulled it against her face. She just likes to feel something soft against her cheek while she sleeps.

No, you're not worrying over nothing. Both of my sons slept on their sides and even stomachs, but I never had anything in the crib, nothing; not even a blanket. I dressed them warm enough so they'd feel snuggly, but no blankets...just to be safe. She'll cry for a few nights (maybe more!) but as long as she has her paci, she'll get through it. better to have her mad at you now, then have a terrible tragedy on your heart. After about a year she's fine with it. Enjoy her, it goes quickly!

Hi B.:

I wouldn't worry too much about it - my son slept with a wubbanub (soothie binkie with a beanie baby attached to it) since he was about 3 months old. As long as they are sucking the paci, the risk of SIDS goes down dramatically.

It's natural to worry - even I go in to see if he's still breathing sometimes. You are a good mom.

PS-And I agree with the breathable bumper bit. We have one too and it also helps keep the crib cooler and the air circulating.
