I just had my second child Preston just 5 months ago. Since my insurance went out on me I couldnt get the Mirena birthcontrol and had to settle for the Depo shot. This is about my last month on it and I've only had it once but I read its 99.9% effective in preventing pregnancy. Well here's my problem, my doctor told me that I might have some irregular bleeding at first but I dont recall her saying it would stop my cycle. Well since Ive gotten it my cycles have gone as planned and I'm usually not one to mark it on the calender but I did the last month. Sorry for TMI but last month it came on the 2nd and stopped about 5 days later as it always does. Only this month....no show. A little..ok alot worried since I JUST had my last and final baby that we planned. I'm praying its just lingering b/c of the Depo but everyday makes me more nervous. My husband..not as worried in fact I think he's hoping I'm pregnant and with a girl....of course cause he has no worries until the kids are actually here.Anyway have any of you had a depo and if so did it stop ur cycles or what? Please give me as much info as possible. I cant take a PT until my husband gets paid next week. I'll be bald by then if my cycle hasent showed. Help!

What can I do next?

I like you, am on the Depo shot. I am also 22, with a one year old girl and 2 year old boy. I started in September and that month I had a small period, then 2 weeks later I spotted and by the next month, nothing, but my stomach cramped and was swollen, I also used the restroom a whole bunch and got so worried I took a Preg. test!! It was negative. The past 2 months no period. My doctor said some women react differently. Some women get heavy periods, and others none. I guess I got none because my body has been pregnant and postpartum for the past 4 years, and any type of medicine has a huge reaction for me. You may be the same.

I know a few people that were on the depo shot and it caused them to stop their cycles.I was on it and it caused me to bleed for 5 month after I had my daughter.I would still take a test just in case because if you go to get the shot again they will do a test anyways.

You are probably not pregnant. I have a friend who has been on it for years and has had maybe one or two periods in the last year. She loves it! This is just a side effect of the med. (A great one as far as I am concerned.) Try not to worry. You can always take an at home pregnancy test it see if you are pregnant.

Hey C.,
I used depo before and when I was on it my cycles did stop completely. So I really don't think you have a lot to worry about there. I am surprised that your doctor didn't tell you that it would/could stop them completely and will sometimes happen sporatically (like for me it was every 3-4 months). But Depo is a great form of birthcontrol if you can manage the mood swings that used to come with it. I wouldn't worry and definately wouldn't pull my hair out.

The depo shot can stop your period completely. I've never been on it, but I've been told it's very dangerous. A lot of doctors won't do it anymore because it causes some women's bones not to absorb the calcium they need.

However, I would take a pregnancy test to be sure if your period hasn't started soon. (The ones I used are the Target brand and they're only about $4.)

Good luck!

My cousion had and still gets the depo. She had a cycle for about 6 months then nothion her baby is 14 now so dont worry!! When i got it my doctor told me it could stop my cycle or just make me spot,i got off to have anothr child and it was making my hair shead, so it's different for everyone. One thing i can tell you is to take calsim pill for your bones cause they now have learend it can make your bones weak and brittle.so that women's one a day my doctor says is good, i was going to put my daugther on them and decided not to after they told me that. So just talk to your doctor and ask specifc questions about what you need or want to know, dont beat around the bush. I hope this helps in anyway.

You are probably not pregnant. The Depo shot does indeed have the side effect of little or no period in some women. But beware- a new study has just come out that hormones increase the risk of breast cancer. In the past few years, many menopausal women have stopped taking hormones, and switched to non-hormonal therapies. Doctors are now seeing a decrease in BC beacause of this. So if you want this to be your last child, you may want to talk to your husband about a vastecomy. It is less invasive for him to have a procedure of this sort than for you, less chance for complications, and less chance of you getting the second leading killer of women. He can also more easily get a reversal if you all change your minds later.
good luck

hi C.
i also was on the depo shot, for 3 years. it was wonderful, no pms, no cramping, and no cycle. but every woman is different. ive known some that did have that every month, or some even bleed alittle each day. i, myself, didn't receive one the whole entire time i was on it. but, i would consider talking to your doctor about this.
and what are the possible side effects about this. i hope your doctor also explained about the bone and calcium loss and to take supplements. it is also known to cause ostioporsis. i wouldn't stay on it for more than 3 years. besides, your husband could always get fixed!! (ha ha ha!! just kidding)
if you have any more questions, please feel free to email me.

the link above may help provide some information. Fertility for some women comes back immediately but for some women it takes months. In anycase, if it were me, I would use condoms (ugggg)/find other ways to 'play' until a week or 2 after you get set on other bc. Good luck.

After I had my daughter I went onto the Depo shot. I have heard friends and family that have also taken it. They have said that it stopped theirs for sometimes 6 months or longer. my advice would be to try and find some other source of birth control. I had a terrible experience with it. At first it seemed simle enough, but the shot made me gain weight. I think I must have gained 30 pounds while I was on it. Another reason you may not be getting you period is due to stress. Just try to relax and enjoy your family.

I used to be on Depo and I rarely had a period. It would probably ease your mind to take a PT just in case but I would not worry about the lack of a period, I think it's a normal reaction for some to have little or no periods on this particular BC.

I was on the depo shot for a while and i bleed for 8 mths it works differently on everyone you could take a pt but it may give you the wrong answer so i would suggest you go to planned parenthood or the health dpet and make suer you tell them you are on the shot so they will know. good luck i can tell you the 1% that you have of being pegro I was everytime I had a child I now have 4 boys hahaha that is my life in a whole the 1%.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, while I was on the depo shot I never had a period for the whole 17 months I was on it. The only problem I had was after it took a while to get pregnant. I was always thinking I was though because it cause my periods to become very irregular. I would skip a month then have one that lasted for 3 days then skip 1-2 months before another one. But You should take a test anyway just to ease your mind. Hope that helps.

I have never taken it, but I knew a girl who had no cycle whatsoever when she was on it. I wouldn't worry. Artificial hormones always have the ability to screw you up a little.

Best of luck and congratulations on your little son.

Well the Depo usually does STOP your cycles, which is why your OBGYN warned you against spotting.
That is the "positive" to this type of birth control is the no periods. Some people have the reverse though and spot/bleed during the 6mo cyce.
Good luck to you!

I was on the Depo shot for years and didnt have a cycle. It is one of the perks of the shot! I seriously doubt you are pregnant and wouldnt worry about it. I know easier said then done..but honestly its very normal to not have a period when you are on the depo shot.

You should be OK. While I, personally, never used the Depo-shot, my best friend did for about 3 years and she hardly ever had a period. She was concerned at first too and even took a pregnancy test--well, several. If you are really freaked out about it, take a test or make an appt. with your doctor. He/she should be able to calm your fears.

Hi C.!
I am currently on depo and have been since I had my son 2 years ago. I got the shot a couple days after I had my son. Before then, I was on Depo for 6 years. I had irregular bleeding at first after the birth of my son for about 6 months. I no longer get my period. I haven't had a period for 1 1/2 years! Which I must say I love. It takes a few months for the Depo and your body to adjust. I noticed that the first time I was on Depo and the second time as well. I would bleed for a week one month and then nothing the next month. I believe what you are experiencing is completely normal. I don't think you are pregnant. I wouldn't stress to much. You just had a baby so your body is still trying to get bad to normal...(if that is possible) ha ha :)
Good luck and hang in there!!!!

First, calm down, breath, and do a little research. A friend of mine was on the depo shot and almost never had a period. But then again, another bud of mine bleed all the time with it. I depends on you body, I would really look into it before pulling out all of my hair. :o)
One of the most common side effects of Depo-Provera is the absence of menstruation during the first year of use, which affects a quarter to half of all users.

I'm 24 and when I turned 16 I had to get on birth control "per my mother" And I started on the Depo shot and I stopped taking the shot the December of 1999 (I was 17) and I never got pregnant and I didn't have any cycles. Then after I stopped the Depo (December of 99')I didn't get my cycle back after I stopped the shot until July of 2000. I got pregnant in August of 00' and had my son in April of 01'. I started the shot again after I had my son, and I didn't have and cycles the whole year I was on the shot, but I did start my cycle again when I switched to the pills. But I guess it's different for all women when it comes to the Depo shot. Good Luck on your test.

Hi C.,

I have been on the Depo for Two years! I haven't had a period sense I started taking it...WOOO HOOOO! If you are taking the shot you aren't pregnant! Unless you had sex before the shot but my doctor gave me my first shot before I left the hospital. I think I had some spotting once or twice but it is totally normal not to have a period and if you stay on the shot it is awesome and if long enough you won't have a period any more either. To tell you the truth I haven't missed it and if your anything like me then you will still have to take a PT just to ease your mind....Good luck and I totally get your thing about him not worrying until the baby is here.
