Am I Crazy??

I have had my 16 month old in several daycare centers and it seems that they all have a problem with playing kid friendly music i.e.If your happy and you know it. I walked in to my kids daycare on Friday they where playing rap music and the rapper was speaking about sexual things! Am I crazy or is it normal that the music in daycares are geared towards the teacher (to make their day go by quicker). Am I asking to much? Pls advise...

Hi A.,
You are not crazy at all! I directed a day care for several years and would not approve of even 106.1 fm on the radios much less personal music to be played. The only radio station allowed was disney radio and classical/children's music. Speak to the director immediately. Even though most children don't understand what the songs are talking about some might, and they will talk....

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Heavens no, you're not crazy! Sounds like the daycare workers are. And anyone who says music doesn't have any affect on babies is crazy. I'd consider that an incredible lapse in judgement on their part and high-tail it out of there if they won't acknowledge your request to put an end to it and play age-appropriate music instead. It takes a selfish person to put their musical tastes ahead of a child when it means exposing them to filth. I've never heard of anything like that in my life at a day-care facility. THAT'S crazy, not you!

No you are not crazy. It's crazy for them to play that music in front of the kids. They should be there on the clock for the kids, not to pass time with music like that. I would not like that at all!!!

Oh, no! You are not crazy. These centers should be geared toward the child. How scary.

I dont have a recommendation for a day care center, per se. I would recommend looking into home based day cares. Usually these are women with a small group who gear their business toward the child and his/her development. There may be a few suggestions for your area in the Mamasource database.

Good luck! I know how nerve wracking it is to find a good day care.

I am sure you have had many replies. This is absolutely NOT normal and should not be tolerated. My 2 year old goes to a daycare on the Irving/Coppell border. They are wonderful and play only child friendly music just as I would expect. I am wondering what daycare in Irving your child is attending? I have scoped out all of them to find the perfect place for my little guy. Plus, I work for Verizon and many of us have babies in daycare in the Irving/Las Colinas area. I would be happy to give you referrals of places to check out.

I do NOT think you are crazy at all! I can understand not wanting to listen to Barney all day, lol, but surely there is a good compromise -- XM Kids has great music that I listen to even when my kids aren't around. Radio Disney is a free station, and the music is acceptable for kids. If they don't want to have kids' music on at all, then why not go with classical or VERY easy listening??? There is no way I would allow my kids to be around music with questionable lyrics. Hope you can find a daycare that's a bit more sensible (and reasonable). Good luck --

L.

You are not crazy! I would say that the day care workers in the places you have been are crazy and selfish and uncaring. I wish you the best of luck in finding a more suitable place for your child. This is a magical time in a child's life and happy music can be such a good influence.

I, too, live in Irving, but have the great fortune of having my mother care for my daughter right now. If I had to look for a center and came across that kind of attitude, I would be at my wits end.

I hope you find a good place soon.

That is crazy and insane! It sounds like they are more worried about your check than to watch your child! It is scary to leave your children with people you don't know, but we have to and to have that going on makes you feel like what else is going on that you don't know about! It is extremely reasonable to think and feel that way! Good for you and you are a good mom to think that way!

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

I would visit the next facility over the course O. the day - around lunch, 5p, randomly. They should have an open door policy. And, be point-blank about the issue as well.

Although at 16 mo., I'm sure the music isn't playing much O. an influence. But, it will very soon - about 2yrs old. All toddlers want to do is sing and dance! So, it's crucial (in my opinion) that the proper music is around - fun songs, instrumental, clapping, etc. NOT rap. NOT rock. NOT junk they will be listening to in their teen years.

You are NOT crazy!!
