Am I a Clean Freak?!

I clean our house once per week, and do small pick ups throughout the week as needed. Our house is usually "messy" with toys and such laying around. I try to keep up, but it seems so hard with kids and working. I like to wash the sheets once per week (now, whether this gets done is another story!). I vacuum and clean bathrooms once per week or once every other.

My hubby says I am a clean freak. Cleaning to him means picking up any clutter and that is it. He has NEVER and I mean never once mopped or dusted or vaccumed or cleaned a toilet in our house. Surely I am not a clean freak, right?

What can I do next?

Nope, just normal. My husband 'picks up' clutter...kind of. If 'picking up' is stuffing stuff in drawers and closets. His theory 'as long as I can't see it.' Vacumn? Mop? Sweep? Clean the shower or toilet? Bwah ha ha ha!

I would not say you are a clean freak! If you cleaned top to bottom everyday all day then maybe. What you do sounds like general house maintainence.

No you are not a clean freak. That's what husbands say when they don't want to help you clean up. It's a variation of "somehow this must be your fault".

No, you are not. You are doing regular maintenance of your home so that it can look presentable and you can feel secured.

If you do not maintain the regularly used areas, it is going to be double the work and get nasty.

A clean freak is someone who wipes the floor with a mop, then goes back and wipe little areas that they missed with a lysol wipe, then maybe if that didn't get it go back and use a paper towel to dab here and there...it crosses the line between OCD and perfectionist by then!

Nope. Totally normal!
I p/u the main living area every night before bed and I can't leave my kitchen over night. Dishes must be in dishwasher, pans washed and sink shiny (flylady!!).
I am like you and do my bathrooms once a week (sometimes I will clean the guest bathroom more if I am expecting company). I try to do our sheets every week, but like you it doesn't always happen. I also dust, vacuum and mop floors weekly.
Hubby does all the laundry and puts it out in the living room for me to fold. I do that as I can ~ while boys are playing or when I am watching a show.

You do not sound like a clean freak to me!

I have a GF who cleans her house from top to bottom EVERY day...I mean the whole works, mopping all floors that can be mopped, vacuuming every area that can be vacuumed, including moving furniture, dusting, the works! She never has a full load of laundry to do except the sheets which she does 2x a week, she throws in everyone's clothes from that day at night before she goes to bed, she irons her sheets for crying out loud! Now THAT is a clean freak! Believe it or not, she works full time too...she is incredible...and she makes it look so easy! I always joke (and so does my hubby) that she should come live at my house for a week :)

~Edit~
I have watched her in amazement for years, we will just be visiting and gabbing and she will have touched and cleaned every surface in her house in about an hour. I do not know how she does it...my best guess is that its so easy because its already clean? I mean she does it EVERY day, so it only takes less than 10 mins. to mop her kitchen floor because its already so clean and she is so on top of the laundry, that on most days she only has 1 load to do! I wish I could get my house to that level of cleanliness as well as to the point where it takes that lil' effort...but I just cant seem to do it, and I have tried...but I am so not about to mop my kitchen floor when its already clean :)

Nope, you sound like you have a good, normal schedule. House cleaning services are usually hired to clean a house once per week or once every other week.

I WISH I had the time & energy to clean once a week! And it's good to wash sheets once a week too, especially if you have dust mite allergies (like me...).

Guys just don't know what "clean" means :)

No. Trust me you are not. My husband is. Vaccums every couple days. Declutters every day. Cant handle dishes in the sink even a few.
I'm like you and prefer once a week. Too hard for me during the week.
It may be frustrating sometimes that I cant keep up with the cleaning, but I'm very thankful to have a husband who can and does.
Clean when you can. As long as it doesnt dictate your life to clean, you're good.

You are not a clean freak! Your routine sounds exactly the same as mine..declutter throughout the week, followed by a major weekend clean. Maybe if your hubby dusted or cleaned a toilet sometimes he would understand how often those things NEED to be cleaned :)

Nope - a clean freak vacuums and mops every day. Your husband is just name calling to divert attention from his slacker attitude toward household chores. :)

Tell him to stop name calling and start dusting. :)

Sounds like my schedule. During the day her toys can be wherever as long as it doesn't look too horrible (she usually keeps her toys in the den or her or my room and has a couple in the living room) but every night before bath we pick them up and put them in the den toy box or her bedroom toy box.
I do general clean up on the kitchen every day and pick up but once a week I do the schedule you just mentioned in your post, right down to the sheets once a week and whether them getting done is another story lmao. It's not a female thing either, in case your hubby claim that if you tell him your normal lol, because my ex husband would get to the point of organizing every closet and drawer (now that's a clean freak hahaha), but he would clean to your schedule... except I could never get him to dishes more than once a week.

@inmy30s already: Oh my goodness. fly your friend out here. I wish I could do all that every day. I am such a procrastinator with clothes because I hate folding them... It'd probably be easier if I got on top of it like she does. and I agree inmy30s I am not about to vacuum or mop when it's already clean, it's like unmotivating when you can look at it and just tell it's already clean haha.

@Stephanie H.: I'm so glad to know I'm not weird because I fold my clothes in the living room when I'm watching a show. It makes it a lot less boring, but I felt like I was weird for it.

I'd say you're pretty normal. I'm a bit of a clean freak, but don't freak if there's a bit of dust. I'm more of a freak about things being picked up nightly and the floors, walls and doorways staying clean.

I also vacuum the kitchen/dinning room every other day (I have a 14 month old and no dog! food everywhere!)

No, you aren't a clean freak. A clean freak would not allow a "messy" house unless she had pnuemonia. My SIL vacuums the kitchen immediately following EVERY meal.....

sounds about like my schedule so I would say you are doing it right :-) I insisted many years ago on changing my sheets about every 4-5 days (afterall, it takes what, 10 minutes at the most?) when I bought a set of navy blue flannel sheets...because of the color and texture, it really "revealed" what is left behind from two humans sleeping 8 hours a night for several nights so I now just feel cleaner changing them more often :-) otherwise, all the big chores get done about once a week with daily picking up...just tell your husband to chill out and be thankful he doesn't live with one of those women you see on "Hoarders" :-)

ok if you don't fit the lable clean freak, but just so you can compare, i probably clean more like once a month, I have to fight the feelign that i don't have to clean it until it looks dirty. So label me lazy and gross,

treat hubby gently and dangle carrots infront of his nose and be very specific with what you want him to do. Does he feel ignored and neglected because you spend time doing the cleaning and he wants to hang out with you or is he just complaining because you asked him to pick up his dirty underwear from under the bed?

Nope you're not a clean freak at all. I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to clutter. I freely admit it puts me in a bad mood. I work full time from my home and in between calls I try to get chores done daily. I make sure my four y/o picks up her toys every night. After she leaves for school in the morning I make her bed and do a quick touch up cleaning in there for dust. I also do a quick clorox wiping of the sinks and toilets daily but a good scrubbing weekly. The dishes get loaded into the dish washer throughout the day. The counters and table are cleaned after every meal. I sweep, mop and vacuum every few days. I have a one of those little cordless handheld vacs for the days in between if I see crumbs. I do a load of the kids clothes daily and hubby's and my clothes every other day. I can't stand doing laundry and nothing irks me more than having a ton of it backed up so if I do a load a day it's a quick task that's over in an hour. The clothes are immediately hung, folded and put away because I refuse to iron anything. The towels may sit in the basket until the evening when the kidos are down for the night and I'm watching a show on tv. If it's always "clean" then it takes a lot less effort to maintain. I can usually run through my house top to bottom for a good scrubbing in under 2 hours. That's all four bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, kitchen, living room and dining room. I just break it up into one room a day getting a good scrub and tidying up the rest. It seems alot less overwhelming to me. My hubby also pitches in to help with cooking, dishes, laundry if needed, scrubbing bathrooms. Whatever needs to be done he will do if I ask him. But he will never take the initiative to do it on his own.

he might think you are a clean freak because you do the main stuff when he's home. Husbands hate that, at least both of mine. Mine hates for me to pull out the vacuum on the weekend when he wants peace. So, I do everything while he is still out working so I can spend time with him on the wknds. That might be why he thinks you are a clean freak, you are probably telling him on Saturday "Man, I need to change the sheets and get this floor mopped and wipe down the bathroom", and he probably hears that EVERY weekend, lol. So thus he believes you are a clean freak.
