Alternative to Cake for a Baby Shower

I am helping throw a baby shower for a coworker. The party starts at 9:30 AM, which to me, seems too early for cake. Can anyone help me think of a sweet alternative to cake, that's also cute and festive? I don't mind making something, but I have two kids of my own, so time is limited in the evenings. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I like the coffee cake idea.

I think fruit sundeas is the way to go, just have a bunch of fruit cut up with yogurt, chocolate, nuts, ect to be the toppings for the sundaes. Sounds delicious!

I also don't think anyone would complain about cake being to early, especially the mommy to be!! :)

Food-wise you can replace the cake with a muffin (instead of cupcake) tower (glazed orange-cranberry muffins) or coffee cake or cinnamon pull apart. Pumpkin or banana bread.
For cute and festive (but not edible), have you ever seen a diaper cake? it is a tiered-cake made from diapers rolled and tied with ribbons. Doubles as great present and stand-out centerpiece.Google for instructions and to see other peoples ideas. I will send you a pic of the one I did if you want.

Muffins - Michaels has great cup cake liners now that dress things up (actually on sale this week too I think) and you could sprinkle colored sparkle sugar on the top before baking.

We did a breakfast shower for me..

we had eggs, bacon, waffles, and doughnuts, and pastries..
juice, coffee and milk.

it was a great turn out and everyone loved the idea of a breakfast shower.
just get some cute doughnuts, or little brownies/muffins.

You could do a buffet of breakfast "sweets" like muffins, danishes, donuts and make them all "mini" and then have a small cake for those who would like it.

I think a "strawberry shortcake" style cake would be great in the morning... it's like having coffee cake with fruit!

I love a chunk of cake for breakfast, but I understand what you mean! Breakfast pastry of some sort would be good -I've even seen "doughnut towers" from Krispy Kreme! Of course you could get assorted doughnuts and sweet rolls and arrange them nicely on a tiered serving piece or pretty tray. Petit fors are also usually LOVED -and they're not breakfasty, but not like a big chunk of cake (more like a sweet little bite). A variety of sweet muffins (especially the bite sized ones) would be nice too.

By the time you get around to cake it will be lunch time. If you play games, and open the gifts before the food it should be at least 11 by then. I eat cake anytime LOL. Good Luck

Sorry I have to agree...never too early for cake! ;) Besides, if the party is beginning at 9:30 you probably won't even be eating cake until at least 11 or so, so it's not too early then! I think you should buy a cake or cupcakes or pastries...I mean if you are going to be making the other food I'd always rather buy the dessert, it makes me more excited to eat it after I've been in the kitchen all day! Haha, I guess it shouldn't be about me but the guest of honor, but still! ;)

My babyshower was a brunch, so I requested no cake.

If this is at work where you don't want to put together a full spread, I'd keep it simple...fresh fruit and a sweetroll cake. You can take canned sweet rolls, cut them into quarters and bake in a bundt pan. Turn over on a plate and drizzle with the icing that comes with the rolls. Depending on the crowd, you may need two, but it is quick, hassle free and inexpensive!!

I am more traditional and feel that every shower should have a cake, no matter what time. Other than that though you can do cute donuts, I know some places do heart shaped ones. you can do petit fors, mini cupcakes, or maybe mini muffins with a dollop of icing to make it more cake-like. Have fun!

Ha Ha. My work gave me a shower cake on one of my last days during a monthly meeting, which took place at 7:00AM! That was early. I had to be polite, but no one else ate any until later in the day.

Coffee Cake or Donuts...you can still put festive little baby things on the tray or on each individual donut...if you order ahead, you may be able to request special color frostings.
