Alternative Medicines in Northern Suburbs

My mom has had back problems for about the last 30 years and they don't seem to be getting better. She knows what causes most of the issues(arthritis, degenerative discs) but not all. Nothing has really helped her other than the water exercizes she does and regular massages and adjustments. In the last 2 to 3 years the pain has really increased. She recently stayed at my sisters house in CO. My sister called me telling me how worried she was about mom. My dad has to get her out of bed in the morning and the first 30 to 45 minutes she could tell that mom was in a good amount of pain. She is only 63(which does not seem so old now that I am in my 30's) but says she feels about 85. I talked to my mom about the whole situation and she is tired to having MRI's and being given pain medication that makes her loopy. SO...I am just wondering if anyone out ther has had good experiences with alternative medcine. I think she is looking for an acupuncturist(this site needs spell check:) or something along those lines to start off with. She lives in Evanston, so some where in the northern suburbs would be great!

What can I do next?

Your Mom should do a combination of chiropractic, accupressure and accupuncture. They've done wonders for me!

Hi J.

I am a Chiropractor here in Evanston and would be happy to answer any questions that you may have. First of all, I see a lot of patients who have Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD), Arthiritis and other problems of the sort. DDD is not always a surgical case. There are many factors which need to be evaluated first. When a patient comes into our office, we do a Consultation & Exam to determine if we can help. We work with the head if neurosurgery at Evanston Northwestern, so in the event that we feel a patient is a surgical consult we refer to him. Most cases respond very well to Chiropractic Care. I encourage you to do some research! Chiropractic is a very safe and proactive way to get your mom on the right track- back to a state of well being. Please call me with any questions that you may have.

J....

I have had major back surgery...I was in my 30's when I was in a car accident ...I lived in horrid pain for 3 1/2 years and then my liver was toxtic from pain meds...so I had to go back and try something. A good doctor (thank God I found one) will try most alternative medcines before doing surgery... I went thru different therapies and other alternative treatment before we realized that surgery was the way to go. I am thankful that my doctors tried everything before surgery...but I am also thankful that I had the surgery. I could not live in the pain that I had forever!! Get your mom to a good doctor and if does not want to try different treatment and just wants to do surgery...go to another!! My PM & R was out of CINN, he was wonderful..his name is Dr. Dan Hurley and my Neurosurgeon was Dr. Fred Greisler and he is now in Aurora..if I had back pain ...I would crawl to his office from Chicago!!

My family has been going to a chiropractor named Brandon Kolaski in Glenview for a number of years. I like him, but we love the massage therapist named Suzy who is absolutely wonderful. She has really helped my mom who has terrible back trouble. I know they do acupuncture there, although I have never had it. They are on Glenview road and Waukegan.

847-724-CARE is their number. Good Luck.

Hi J.,

I just recently got a referral of this 'natro-path' (sp?)
doctor from a friend. I haven't called to make an appt. yet but I want to see him for a few reasons.

Check out the website and see what you think. I believe he's located in Northbrook.

Hi J.,

This is a topic I am highly passionate about as my mom has pains as a result of a medicine she took, and also have an interest in alternative medicine. Other than the reasons you listed, I am not sure if your mom's cause is medicinal, diet, or other, but I would research what her diet is as some foods cause us to be sick. I would also check with a holistic doctor. I have included a link I found while I did a google search under "holistic medicine" "chicago".
http://chicago.citysearch.com/yellowpages/directory/Chica...

The entire google search was:http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22holistic+medi...

It may sound crazy to most, but yoga, pilates, and/or massage with aromatherapy treatments might help her. Good luck!

Dr. Rentea is a wonderful M.D. who deals with alternative measures first. She has done wonders for my children and now my husband and I are going to start seeing her. She is really talented! Dr. Andrea Rentea is just a wealth of knowledge. If she can't help, she will know who can.

She also has an incredible knowledge of women and menapausal and post-menapausal women. Your mother will be in good hands.
