Alternate Transportation - White settlement/Fort Worth Area

Hi all. Mom is visiting the week of Thanksgiving and has a couple of days where we're not sure if hubby will have off. I used my days to visit dad out of state (failing health). Mom doesn't want to rent a car/drive in an area she's not familiar with. So far, it looks like we are at least a mile's walk from anything resembling public transportation. SIGH.

Does anyone know of or has anyone used taxis or other types of transport in the area? Just trying to think of ways she and her grandson can go to the mall or movies, etc.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Uber.

https://get.uber.com/

You pay on-line. sign up on line. Every driver is thoroughly researched and background check...licensed...bonded..insured.

I've used uber in Orlando. My nephew uses them in the Dallas area. The app lets you know what the fare will be. I thought it was outstanding and plan to use them wherever we travel. Beats a cab by a long shot as far as I'm concerned.

Sometimes when we're traveling I'll take transportation to the museum or mall and coordinate with my husband so I'm only paying one way. She might be ready to just hang out and relax too.

A mile walk really isn't a big deal if it's safe. My kids and I do that quite frequently. Part of the adventure. I love Florida for that reason. One of the most pedestrian friendly places we travel to.

Blessings!

For a few days - especially over Thanksgiving (I would not go NEAR a mall to save my soul!) - she and grandson can stay home and play, bake cookies, do stuff in the yard, read, watch dvds, etc.
Every mall is pretty much like every other mall - and during the holidays they are jam packed.
She's choosing not to rent or drive - that's fine - but that's her choice.
Do not assume she actually WANTS to go anywhere.
If she does - she can figure it out - but cabs can be expensive.
If she wants to not cook, she can have pizza (or what ever) delivered while you and Hubby are out working.

Uber It is GREAT and very popular in our area.

The drivers are locals who have been through thorough background checks and drive their own cars.

It is a also great source for extra income if you like to drive, are a people person and have a good clean car.

I signed up online with my credit card and then I got the APP. When you need a ride, just click on the tab to call a ride and give your location to be picked up. You are typically picked up within 10 minutes or less because the Uber APP "pings" drivers in your area and someone accepts the job. You can watch the GPS on your phone and see them driving to you. It is really cool and economical.

Example: sometimes I meet hubby at our club and we don't want 2 cars there. In the past, I have taken a cab for the 20 minute or so ride and it is typically $30-$35 with tip. Uber runs less than $20 total cost.

There is no tipping, EVERYTHING is on the card and they email a receipt to you.

Our club uses this service a lot for anyone who has had too much to drink and needs a ride home. I have my college daughter set up with an account in case she gets stuck somewhere and needs a ride home.

Check them out online.. they have a good website and answer lots of questions.

Depending on what time you or hubby leave in the morning, could you drop them off at the mall in the morning before you go to work? They could have breakfast, shop, see an early movie and then you could pick them up at lunch and drop them off at home. Or, could you swing by at lunch, pick them up and then drop them off at a location to spend the afternoon. The children's museum in Ft Worth would be a great place to visit - lots of things to do, most exhibits are inside so it would work even if the weather is cold. Enjoy your visit.

Be very careful with Uber.

Here in Austin at "Peak times" it ended up costing people $100.'s of dollars. for less than 5 miles.. I will find the article.
I would make sure you have a confirmed, highest price.

Or see if you can call a cab company and ask if any of their independent drivers who will work with you to be on call and work with you on price. I had a friend that did not have a car for a few months, she found a cab driver that was willing to work with her, on her schedule for set prices because it was a length of scheduled times.
