Allergy Agony

Writing to see if someone might have a home remedy for spring allergies that affect only the eyes. I never had a problem until we moved into our house 10 years ago. Since then, starting in late March/early April, I have extreme itchiness and burning in my eyes, to the point where I am nearly going out of my mind. It lasts about 3-4 weeks and then I'm fine the rest of the year. I've seen my PC, my eye doctor and an allergist, and have tried lots of different prescription and over the counter drops and antihistamines. Nothing works. The allergist did not recommend injections as he said the problem is only once a year, and the injection schedule is year-round. Right now I'm wrapping ice cubes in a wash cloth and applying them several times a day, as well as trying different meds. It gets to the point where I can't stand it and then I start rubbing my eyes like crazy just to get 10 seconds of relief. My eyes are so painful and swollen I look like a muppet. I'm hoping that perhaps someone out there has a home treatment that has worked for them - I am seriously desperate. Any tips would be welcomed!!!!

What can I do next?

Do you have central AC or a window AC? The outdoors is not your friend. When in your car, use the AC. At home, use the AC while you sleep at night. If you have central, consider using a window AC this time of year. It will help SO MUCH.

Shower the instant you get home, change your clothes, and keep your windows closed.

And, take local bee pollen daily (starting several months before allergy season next year if you can). If your city has a farmers market, see if there's a honey seller there - the good ones will also sell bee pollen. Just make sure it's local. Must be from your area so you build up a tolerance for the local pollens.

This works for me. My allergy symptoms are in my eyes too, but they mostly get dry and sticky, not itchy. Some days I shower and some I don't - but I do change my pillow case every day so that if I don't shower when I come inside, I don't sleep with yesterday's pollen.

You might want to give homeopathy a try. About 80% of people get results via this approach, but the remedy that works (there are a few different ones that help for allergy) has to be tailored to your particular symptoms. You can search for "homeopathy, allergies" online, or be more specific with "itchy eyes." Here's one such site: abchomeopathy.com/forum2.php/275308/

Most of the common remedies are available for under $10 at your local health food store, and even many major pharmacies. I have found that Histiminum works very well for me. I have allergies to grass pollen that starts this time of year, and this one remedy handles it beautifully, with no side effects. Other remedies help me a bit.

If you're using an AC, even a one in your car, be sure to change/clean the filter every week. An air purifier in your bedroom might help or add one to your furnace.

Have you tried Patanol/Pataday or Bepreve? (They are prescription drops for itching.) Preservative free artificial tears to remove allergens from your tears? You can keep the bottle in the fridge so the drops go in cold. And you have probably noticed that rubbing your eyes makes the itchiness worse so try hard not to do it! You might want to revisit an eye doctor that has a lot of experience with ocular allergies. The other suggestions for showering and changing your pillowcase sound really good too!

We were drowning in allergies and having trouble with all kinds of sensitivities to various allergy meds. I started using local honey a couple weeks back and everyone is lots better. I got som honey today from a local farm where we were picking strawberries so I am super excited to try that one as it is made pretty close to my house. We went from massive allergies that were turning into sinus infections to everybody feeling good. Local honey might be worth checking into, good luck and feel better!

I have the same troubles. The drops don't 100% work because the skin around my eyes itches too. I am on Zyrtec but I still have problems with itchy eyes. One thing that does seem to help is to put coconut oil on my eyes. Not in my eyes but all around them

Do you know what you are allergic to?

If it is outdoor allergies that come in, durning the early spring you can try a teaspoon of locally made honey a day a few weeks before it should start and maybe it will kick in your bodies natural immunities.

If not maybe there is a food, that you eat at that time of year and don;t realize that you are allergic to?

It could be anything but the best way to counter it is to know what it is..

Good luck

Replace your pillowcase frequently.

You are bringing in the pollen in your hair, and when you go to bed, you are depositing the pollen on your pillowcase.... and then, you rub your face in it all night long.

If necessary, replace the pillowcase every night...... that may help a bit....

Also... do you wear contacts? Having the contacts in at this time of year may exacerbate the problem by trapping pollen under the contacts......

I have known many people have great sucess with honey. First it must be from a local hive. Second, it must be RAW honey...never heated. Take a teaspoon in the morning, and evening.

I've had great success in treating many healthi isues with essential oils and Lavender is a natural anti-histimine. Apply a drop to the back of your neck (at the base of your skull) or a drop on your chest.
