Allergy? - North Reading,MA
My 8 month has redness/small bumps under her eyes. There is no pus & she doesn't seem bothered. Ped said it could be contact dermatitis & gave erythromycin ointment 4 x day. It seems worse after she crawls around, even if I just vaccumed. No new food or detergent. Thoughts?

It could be a dust/dust mite allergy...even if you just ran the sweeper, you are still stirring the dust up--especially at floor level. Do you have any pets? It's possible it's coming from the pet dander as well. This could also be one of those things that seems to get 'irritated' with some exercise for her. Hope you find the source soon!

Hi E.,
Carpets and even hardwoods these day have been processed with synthetic chemicals. New carpets are to be vacuumed almost daily for months before a little one should crawl around on it. If the flooring is newer keep her off of it for a while. Bumps are not good but if its the flooring it could be doing something else to her as well.

Is it possible that she's reacting to chemicals in carpeting? Carpets tend to outgas for many years. This could be from the carpet itself, or the padding or glue underneath.

allergy eyes at least on me you get bags under your eyes. are they bags or bumps. they are called allergy shiners cause they tend to be black in color. contact dermatiits which I don't know that much about could be the dye in the carpet. something you aren't aware of. I would suggest going to the allergy forum in about.com. it may be the vacuming also it stirs up dust and it could be a simple dust allergy.dust is in the carpet and you stir it up when you vacumn and it will take about 30 minutes for it to settle again. I have dust allergies. keep a diary and watch for patterns.

Have you tried Aveeno Hydrocortizone Cream?
That stuff gets rid of and controls everything it seems.
Use small amounts twice daily...that should do the trick.
It's what my son's pediatrician told us to use on eczema and rashes...and be sure to buy the Aveeno brand as it's the mildest formula.
Hope it works for your daughter.
Good luck!
