My son has eczema on his leg right underneath his pullups there is like a whole bunch of bumps it seems to be getting worse just in that area. I have put the lotion and that kind of stuff on it, it does not seem to be helping. Any suggestions on what it might be? I noticed that they are all over his body as well and on his face. Yes, adding more to this he has no problems before with the same pullups hes wearing, and he does not scratch at them either. If we try to mess with the bumps he says it hurts.

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

There are two things I can suggest. One, having eczema myself, I can tell you that there is no lotion I've ever found that works. I use Ucerine Cream daily on my legs and its wonderful! My daughter also had horrible diaper rash when she was tiny her doctor recommended instead of diaper rash creams, (that also don't work), to try buying some Bag Balm at the drug store and mixing it with Maylox to make a paste. It really coats the area with a heavy layer to protect and the Maylox dissolves the acid from the little accidents. Its an awesome and inexpensive solution!

Mi Stephaie,

My son has Eczema and I have had to get a hydrocortisone cream and use it until the spots clear up. I had to get a perscritption from the doctor. It didn't help a whole lot. The doctor said that the best way to avoid the dry skin is to give a bath every other day or to use a very thick lotion or cream that stays with the skin. I used either the Fruit of the earth Vitamin E Cream in the jar or the Eucerin Cream the comes in the jar!!!

My Daughter has it real bad. I can NOT use anything with Frangance , such as body wash or Lotion. When I do use it, SHe breaks out. I started using Hydrocordazone Cream and then I put The Natural Jason Lotion with ALoe Vera (whole foods) in it over the top, IT seems to help. My Doctor suggested to give her a multivitamin with Zinc in it. I found it at Whole Foods and Now her Skin is clear..... Good Luck.

Let him run around free without a diaper as much as you can. Get some air to the area to help let any excess moisture dry out.

My son has the same issue but it's all over his bottom as well. Now that I have read this I am wondering if it's the pull up? He always has his hand down his britches scratching his butt. If you tell him to stop he yells, "My butt itches!" It's great when you're in public.

Hi S.,
Are you positive it is eczema? It sounds like a yeast infection. My son gets that from time to time. His doc said to put athletes’ foot cream on it twice a day (Lotrium -sp? for example). I was skeptical at first but it really worked!
Good luck,

Hi S.,

My son has a friend with severe eczema. He tried many, many different prescription creams from the dermatologist without
luck. They all helped a bit but never got to the root of the problem. Eczema is linked to allergies and sensitivities to common household and personal care items. Why? They are all loaded with caustic ingredients. Here's an article from WebMD

Eczema Overview
Eczema is term for a group of medical conditions that cause the skin to become inflamed or irritated.

The most common type of eczema is known as atopic dermatitis, or atopic eczema. Atopic refers to a group of diseases with an often inherited tendency to develop other allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever.

According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the prevalence of atopic eczema is increasing and affects 9 to 30% of the U.S. population. It is particularly common in young children and infants. While many infants who develop the condition outgrow it by their second birthday, some people continue to experience symptoms on and off throughout life. With proper treatment, the disease can be controlled in the majority of sufferers.

What Are the Symptoms?
No matter which part of the skin is affected, eczema is almost always itchy. Sometimes the itching will start before the rash appears, but when it does the rash most commonly occurs on the face, knees, hands or feet. It may also affect other areas as well.

Affected areas usually appear very dry, thickened or scaly. In fair-skinned people, these areas may initially appear reddish and then turn brown. Among darker-skinned people, eczema can affect pigmentation, making the affected area lighter or darker.

In infants, the itchy rash can produce an oozing, crusting condition that occurs mainly on the face and scalp, but patches may appear anywhere.

What Causes It?
The exact cause of eczema is unknown, but it's thought to be linked to an overactive response by the body's immune system to a bacterium that normally lives on the skin or an irritant.

In addition, eczema is commonly found in families with a history of other allergies or asthma.

Some people may suffer "flare-ups" of the itchy rash in response to certain substances or conditions. For some, coming into contact with rough or coarse materials may cause the skin to become itchy. For others, feeling too hot or too cold, exposure to certain household products like soap or detergent, or coming into contact with animal dander may cause an outbreak. Upper respiratory infections or colds may also be triggers. Stress may cause the condition to worsen.

Although there is no cure, most people can effectively manage their disease with medical treatment and by avoiding irritants. The condition is not contagious and can't be spread from person to person.

How Is It Diagnosed?
A pediatrician, allergist, immunologist, dermatologist or your primary care provider can make a diagnosis of eczema. Since many people with eczema also suffer from allergies, your doctor may perform allergy tests to determine possible irritants or triggers. Children with eczema are especially likely to be tested for allergies.

How Can Flare-ups Be Prevented?
Eczema outbreaks can usually be avoided or the severity lessened by following these simple tips.

Moisturize frequently
Avoid sudden changes in temperature or humidity
Avoid sweating or overheating
Reduce stress
Avoid scratchy materials, such as wool
Avoid harsh soaps, detergents and solvents
Avoid environmental factors that trigger allergies (for example, pollen, mold, dust mites, and animal dander)
Be aware of any foods that may cause an outbreak and avoid those foods

I've shown many families how to replace their household items that contain caustic, irritating ingredients with products that are more natural based. No caustic ingredients. I show families how to "go green" and "save green."

My 2 year old is prone to eczema and rashes also and the pediatric dermotolgist has me order "vanicream" from the pharmacy (no prescription needed) because it is a lotion with minimal ingredients. This is a moisturizer for the whole body. For the rash section, the pediatric dermo nurse told me to use any hydrocortisone cream to minimize the rash and lessen the itch. Changing the pull-up more often if that area is moist or letting him go naked a bit at home might help lessen the irritation. Eczema is most prevelent in creases where you might sweat (inside elbows, behind knees, underwear crease)and is really itchy.

My daughter has really bad eczema and my doctor told us to bath them and then just pat dry and put vassiline all over them and then their clothes. Its kind of gross because they are all slimy but it really seemed to help after a couple of days. Other then that I have no idea. I hope this helps a little.

You might want to get it checked out. My son had bumps in his diaper area and I assumed it was a diaper rash...it was a yeast infection. They prescribed me some ointment and it went away! I didn't even think of the fact that a boy could get a yeast infection but it is all due to moisture.
Good Luck!

if you bathe him every night, stop...let him go without a diaper as much as possible..play outside a lot, air him out a lot...don't use lotion, it hurts and makes it worse...use sesame oil or even every day olive oil, not baby oil...it should go away in one to two days...i've had eczema all my life, the creams don't work, they usually irritate it more.

Eczema attacks where moisture lives. Where he sweats, pees, sits in wet clothing is where it will be the most problematic. Baby powder and nakedness are your best bet for now.

Hi S.,

Most eczema is caused by laundry detergent. Even the "free and clear" versions contain toxins that are harmful to humans, including formaldehyde. Lotions can actually add to the problem, as they too often contain formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals.

My recommendation is to switch over to "green" laundry and cleaning products. Not only will you be improving your family's health; but you will also be helping the environment. My favorite brand is Melaleuca. They offer high quality for a price lower than store brand products.

I am a Holistic Health and Nutritional Consultant and would be happy to help you if you have further questions. Please feel free to call me at ###-###-####.

have you tried topical cornstarch? When my boy was tiny,
he did that when he was trying to cut teeth...all those
expensive creams did nothing, but I applied cornstartch to
it every time I changed him and sometimes in between, and
it cleared up...have used it thru the years on grandmother
who was 95 and had rash under her breasts....it cleared it
up also....worth a try. Johnson/Johnson makes a pure
constarch baby powder now I think. Just make sure there is
pure constarch, no talc and no fragrance added.
Good luck.

My son has it pretty bad all over. bumps on belly, legs, arms. etc... So I have to use dreft on his cloths because any other detergent sets it off, i realized when my mom would watch him that it would be worse and It would be because she used her detergent on his cloths. I use Lubriderm lotion with no fragrance and dyes. It seems to be healing fine now. I see more during the summer monnts.
