Allergic to Rice Cereal?
My daughter is 5 months old and just started eating rice cereal. At first she just had a little hive under her eye or a few little dots of "irritation" by her mouth. I wasn't sure it was really anything. However, then the other night she had a rash all over her back. I thought that rice cereal was so unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. Has anyone's child been allergic to this? What does this mean long term for her? What did you try next?
Thanks in advance for any advice and help.

Just a thought, my son could not have rice cereal from 3 months - 3 years and a few months. He was allergic to soy and some rice cereals contain soy. he grew out of it and now has no issue with it. wheneve rI would try something the drs said to wait for the rash to go away and then try again. but I would call the dr before trying again. they will ask if you gave her anything new and tried anything new such as detergents and such.
good luck.

My daughter seemed to be allergic to the rice cereal at that age too...she would get a patch of eczema on her arm. I stopped giving it for a while and used oatmeal instead. I've added the rice back in and it doesn't seem to bother her now, at 8 months. Good luck.

My daughters alleries started the same way, and I thought the same time. My Allergist stated that there are hidden fillers in most foods and it is possible she is having a reaction to a filler not the rice. My daughters reaction was strong as she is highly allergic to dairy & egg. The best thing to do is stop the new food for several days or weeks to be sure it is out of her system, then re-introduce. If her reaction is involving breathing problems, vomiting, or hive throughout the body find a pediatrice allergist or pediatrice dermatologist(depending on the reaction), and do not give her what you think is causing the reaction. I have found with my daughters allergy journey that some things are ok in moderation as they cause the body to accept the problem allergen, however some things even a small exposure can cause the allergy to strenthen and get worse. The good news is if it is a food related allergy most children out grow it.

My son didn't have the hive under the eye, but had the other reactions you describe your daughter as having. My pediatrician said that it was most likely a reaction to the rice cereal as well. We moved on to oatmeal and used that for the duration until he started finger foods. That worked well and was fine from then on! I have tried feeding him rice now that he eats regular food and he does fine with it (although difficult to pick up, so he isn't eating all that much in the long run!) Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you!

Hi L.,
I would recommend stopping the rice cereal right away and taking your daughter to see her pediatrician. While rice allergies are not common, they can happen. You may want to consider taking her to an allergist to be tested so that you can avoid any other allergenic foods. You also may want to hold off giving her solids until she is a little older. Studies have shown that early exposure to foods can result in a higher incidence of allergies. You may want to hold off until she is 6 or 8 months old before trying solids if she is having allergic reactions.
Let us know what the pediatrician says.

When my son was 6 months he had the same reaction to the rice cereal. He then broke out in rashes all over his body.I finally went to a dermatologist. She told me he had eczema and probably an allergy to the cereal. I stopped all foods and just gave formula. Then slowly reintroduced certain foods.I did not go back to the cereal. He is now 13.Has no food allergies. But has occasional eczema.
I would stopp all the foods to see if the hives clear up.Also alot of Drs. recommend creams with cortisone. I was agaisnt that. And instead I used Ecerin.Desitin .Avenno soaps and bath soaps. There is also a product for washing the body instead of water but I forgot the name. Good luck!

HI L..
You can just skip the rice cereal if you daughter is having issues with it. I never gave my daughter, now 2, any rice cereal. I just pureed whatever we were eating (within reason) and fed it to her. You daughter can actually stay on just breast milk until she is 6 months, and she will get plenty of nutrition from you.

check with the doctor and see what he thinks. what are you mixing it with? are you mixing it with her formula? are you feeding her anything else? Have you changed laundry detergents? If you are sure it is the rice cereal then i would stop feeding it to her. call the doctor and see what he or she says.
