Allergic Reaction??? - Des Moines,IA
I have a 5 month old little boy who recently has been excessivley fussy, crying very hard at all times of day, but sleeping well at night. Have gone to doc twice, nothing wrongwith him. Had been giving him multi grain ceral for the past 4 days at dinnertime (he already did well with rice and oatmeal). Could this be an allergic reaction?

It's not necessarily an allergic reaction, but most likely that his tummy is just not ready to digest a multi grain cereal. I went through the same thing with my twins (9 months old now), and just went back to the rice and single grain oatmeals for a while. We tried the multi grains again periodically until they seemed to handle things better. Now at 9 months, we rotate between the cereals to give them some variety, and I have noticed on the days when they get the multi-grain they are sometimes more gassy than otherwise, so we now will be mixing the multi grain with the rice so that it's not so hard on their stomachs.
Good luck!

Switch back to rice for a few days and see if he suddenly does well again. Otherwise, it could be a tooth coming in, growth spurt, a new level of awareness that is overwhelming, or so many other things. But if you switch back to rice and he is better, that would be a pretty good clue that he can't tolerate the multigrain kind [which contains wheat]. Also, it is my understanding that wheat should not be introduced until at least 8 months [some say much longer since it is an allergen], so it might be a good idea to just wait on the multigrain kind for a while regardless of whether or not that is what's causing his behavior.
Here is a great site for finding out what foods to give baby and when, as well as recipes, how to make homemade baby food, nutrition info, etc:

You can also ask your doctor.
There are certain foods that really should not be given to babies- you probably know the obvious honey, chocolate, nuts, etc. but there are others you might not have thought about [like strawberries, which are also highly allergenic]. It's important to know because if you start a food too soon, the baby could actually develop an allergy to it, whereas if you had introduced the same food later on when the child's body was ready for it, it might not cause any issues. It's exciting to let your baby try new foods and see what their reaction is and to see what they really love and hate- but it's not worth the risk of causing food allergies when you could wait a few months and lessen the chance of any allergies developing.

Could just be the multigrain is a little hard for him to process digestively right now.

Try taking him to the chiropractor. Getting adjusted helps with all kinds of issues. Fussiness, sleeping issues, ear infections, aches and pains, colds, etc.
It has helped our kids every time we've takent them. They are now 4 1/2 and 2 1/4 and still go regularily. Our youngest was about 12 hours old the first time he got adjusted. He had a very tramatic birth. Shoulder distocia. Apgar of 0. They had to do cpr. Ship him by ambulance to another hospital with a nicu. TERRIBLE! But he came around after getting to the nicu and my doc got him released to my husband to bring him back to me at the other hospital and I had him stop at the chiro on the way. My husband said our baby LOVED it. He just moaned, relaxed, and let his eyes roll up.

It could be a growth spurt. Is he hungry? Or just fussy? Each baby is different but they say around 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months they go through growth spurts
We have a 7 week old that has been the same the last week, excessively fussy and if she is not eating or sleeping she is fussing or crying. But sleeps great at night. I believe it is a growth spurt and praying it passes any day now!! I want to see her smile and play:)

whether it is an allergic reaction or some other type may not be particularly relevant. At any rate, he may be having some sort of reaction. I would agree with the advice to go back to the single grains that he tolerates. It really is best to stay away from multi-grain until you know for sure that each one is tolerated well and the digestive system is a little more developed. I sure hope things get much better.

Hi H., I would say no to an allergic reaction. I would say it upsets him more. My son had an allergic reaction to peanut butter when he was 14 months old and he broke out in hives. If you are concerned that it is an allergic reaction you can have an alergie test done. The multi grain ceral could be giving him gas.

I don't think it's allergic reaction, but he may have a tummy ache. I would switch back to rice or oatmeal and see if that makes a difference.
He could also be overtired. Is he getting enough sleep? Babies at that age should be getting an average of 14 hours of sleep per day. At 5-months, my babies sleep about 10 hours at night, and then take two 2-hour naps during the day. Every child is different, but that could explain his fussiness.
Good luck!
