My doctor said Claritin is ok to take while nursing but does anyone know about allegra? Seems like they are the same thing but you never know...

What can I do next?

I had this same question for my pediatrician when I nursed my son, so I know this information was accurate 3 years ago, but I can't guarantee that nothing has changed. More is known about Claritin and it is considered to be slightly safer than Allegra, mostly because not much is known about Allegra. It is summarized here http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/meds/cold-remedy/ if you are interested (Claritin is L2 and Allegra is L3). Claritin-D and Allegra-D both have a decongestant component, which can dry up your milk, so don't take those.

They have different ingredients. Claritin is loratadine and Allegra is fexofenadine . Google each to find out the ingredients and whether or not they're safe to take while nursing.

I have a prescription for Allegra and was told by my doctor that it is safe while pregnant and breastfeeding.

They are not the same. You're comparing apples to oranges. both fruit, but different.

Call your Dr. Don't take a mama's advice unless she is a physician.

Since it's after 5, you can call nay pharmacist. Most of the big chains have pharmacists on staff until at least 8.

Yes it is okay. According to my doctor, anything otc is fine and I asked specifically about allegra and she said it is fine. I'd stay away from Allegra-D, though.
