Kids always seem to come home ravenous from school. What do you keep around as an easy snack option?

Easy Mac, fruit, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, peanut butter and cheese crackers. Pretty much anything but candy and junk!

String Cheese

Trail Mix

Pre-slice any fruit, put it in baggies in the fridge where they can reach, and you are set!

Celery and peanut butter with raisins (called something cute but I cannot recall)

Cookies and milk (special treat day)

Cereal

Smoothies! I make them with frozen fruit, avocado, banana, and OJ. The kids love them!

Veggies and dip - same idea with pre-slicing the veggies, and I make my own dip. Either sour cream and onion soup mix packet, or cottage cheese, half container sour cream and a ranch dressing mix packet.

carrots, apple slices and peanut butter, celery w/pb and raisins, cheese sticks, banana, yogurt, tuna on crackers, trail mix, avocado w a little bit of salt, hard boiled eggs, rice cakes, pretzels... if they had an extra good day maybe a homemade cookie or little baggie of fruit snacks.

In reference to Scarlett's answer....the peanut butter on celery with raisins on top is called "ants on a log!" It IS a cute name and a healthy snack :) With smaller kids you can do fun snacks like "going fishing".....you take skinny pretzel sticks, dip them in peanut butter or cream cheese and then try to pick up gold fish crackers or various healthful goodies like raisins, dried cranberries, fresh blueberries, nuts or other various trail mix pieces. They have fun with the little fishing poles and then eating what they've caught!

Always keep several varietys of crackers. Have some cheese handy. Also fruit. Our kids also love yogurt. We keep a good vanilla yogurt on hand, and put some of that in the bowl and either cut up some fruit or put berries in the yogurt or, if the kids prefer, let them eat the fruit on the side. Any leftovers from dinner the night before, or from your own lunch can also be good snack items. Leftover pizza comes to mind, but many other leftovers might be appealing to kids as well.

Protein!!!! Ham or turkey wraps with cheese, peanut butter on apples, small bowl of pasta with sauce. Something to help fill them up until dinnertime! Mine say they're going to die if they don't eat as soon as they walk in the door. ha ha! :)

Depending on what time a child has lunch at school... YES, they do come home RAVENOUS. Mine do too. Because, only 1 meal at school a day.... is simply not enough. Kids need to graze all day. They are active.
My son in Kinder, has lunch time at 10:45am.
My daughter in 4th Grade has lunch at 12:00.
When they come home after 2:30, they are STARVING.
They both also bring snacks to school to eat during recess.

My kids, also will often eat an entire meal when they come home. A "lunch" that is when they come home. And they STILL eat dinner, just fine. So, because I don't feed or buy junk, I feed my kids whatever they need per their hunger, when they come home from school.

Mine (surprisingly) LOVE edamame! I'll buy the frozen bags and nook 'em in the microwave for a minute or two, just before the bus comes. They love it with a little sea salt on top. I'll also sometimes pop popcorn in a large pot. I'll use grapeseed oil and sea salt. They get an extra boost of Omega 3 that way and if you pop the popcorn in a pot and keep the lid on it (scooping only what you need out now and then), it'll stay fresh for at least a couple of days. Let me also say that with this being the beginning of the year, I'm sure I'll be reaching for the snack sized bags of chips etc. soon! You also can't go wrong with sliced apples and yogurt for dipping! :)

My oldest one still in school runs for his school's cross-country team. His school day starts at 7am and he doesn't get home until between 5:30-6:30 depending on how long they run/workout after school. He is always famished by the time he gets home and he takes a substantial lunch with him everyday too. He will often eat leftovers (if there are any) while he's waiting for dinner to finish cooking.

My youngest doesn't have quite the appetite his big brother does :-) but both of them love, love, love sliced apples (granny smith are especially good with this dip) dipped in a combination of cool-whip, plain or vanilla yogurt, and a couple of teaspoons of peanut butter.
It's got nutritional value as well as a "special treat" quality to it.

They also dig into a lot of things already listed by others here.

Mine also come home famished. I make them meals as well. I'll pull out left overs from the night before. They love to eat pasta with melted cheese on top, quesadillas, and one of them likes top ramen soup. They have practice later so I feed them big because now dinner is pushed out a bit.

Kids need to eat a meal, or small meal, about every 3 hours. So when ours come home from school they get good solid food, protein and carbs to carry them over to dinner time. They need to eat since they haven't had food since around noon, some little ones even eat around 11am.

I don't do anything that is simple carbs. I always do at least one that is a complex, such as whole wheat berry bread in a sandwich. If you want to look at Taste of Home you can look up lunch ideas. They are often quick ideas that will translate well to a snack.
