After Birth Bleeding and Pains.

I just had my second son 6 days ago and have been having severe pains for the last couple days. They don't feel like the crampy pains that your supposed to get but really sharp stabbing pains. I can't move at all when i get them and they put me into tears. they last for about a half hour. i don't get more than one or two a day. Also i haven't really been bleeding. Over the last four days all i've been doing is spotting. i can't find any information about it on the web. does anyone know why this is happening? I do plan on calling the doctor on monday. since the pains came up over the weekend i haven't been able to call yet.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

i called my doctor and all he said was for me to use stronger pain killers and that giving birth doesn't mean i have to bleed that much :/

I think you should go to the doctor. Maybe you didn't deliver all of the "after-birth" and this is why you are in such bad pain and haven't finished bleeding like you should. This could lead to infection if this is what it is, so, I recommend getting in as soon as you can. Not to scare you, but, I do know someone that this happened to, and, it eventually led to her death. Congratulations on your new baby, and, take care of yourself mom! God bless!

Call your doctor. When something is wrong, you don't need to wait til Monday, call the service - there will be a covering doctor who can call you back.

Hi E.,

Congratulations on your second child! Your post brought back memories because I experienced the same symptoms after the birth of my second child, which I did not go through after the birth of my first.

Even though I was nursing I still experienced bleeding; I found out that breastfeeding doesn't guarantee no periods. I also found out that the extreme pain I experienced was my uterus shrinking back to prepregnancy size. I did not feel this pain after my first child so it was scary to me, AND it seemed to come on during and just after nursing. I then was told that the letting down of milk to feed the baby also stimulates the uterus to help shrink
it. It's all about the hormones and understanding this can help relieve the stress you have by worrying. Having said this please do check with your doctor to rule anything else out.

Good luck with your newborn and your growing family!

All the best,

Get in touch with the on call doctor or go to urgent care. Don't put yourself at risk or prolong your recovery. Better to get help and find out it is "normal" than to wait and have it be serious. Feel better!

Call your doctor immediately. No reason to wait, so just call.

I had that happen to me after my daugher. Some membrane was still attached to my uterine wall or something. I had very light bleeding until it was removed as well but once the membrance was removed I had normal bleeding (heavier). I'd call your doctors oncall number and speak to the doctor. Not something you want to wait for just to be safe.

Dear E., I am not a doctor but after my second child I had this issue. I was not bleeding but had pain. In my case there had been some afterbirth left inside and the doctor examined me and gave me some meds to cause contractions and get it out.Yes, call your doctor! I hope you feel better soon. Call your doctor's office. There should be a doctor on call to answer your question. Bleeding after birth is a lot like a period, really...just lasts a bit longer.
