Aetna Insurance

My husband just got insurance information from his new job. I have never dealt with Aetna before, so I have no idea what they are like. Does anyone have any experience with them?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

We ended up signing up for the insurance. The only plan offered was a PPO plan, so hopefully it will work out for us. The kids' pediatrician accepts the insurance, but I need to find a new OB/GYN for me. But it could be worse!

I had Aetna PPO for years, and I had one of the best OB/GYNs you could have...Dr David Scates located at Sutter Roseville and also serving Mercy San Juan. He's part of Associate's Women in Health, i think it's called.

I work in the insurance industry and I can tell you with confidence is that the quality of the plan depends on the company that purchases it, whether it is a PPO or HMO plan. If the company is very large you will probably have a better plan with lower deductibles and co-pays than a smaller company. Your best bet would be to read your insurance booklet cover to cover so you know what they will pay for and at what percentage. Aetna also has a website (should be provided in the booklet) for providers in your area.
Hope this helps :)

I used to work for a division of Aetna and the best advice I can give you is to call them before doing anything with your insurance and make sure the doctor is covered and see if you need to get visits preapproved. As long as you do that and document who you talked to and when they will cover it. If you ever have a problem where they won't cover something they said they would call them, tell them who you spoke to and when and they will cover it. Good luck.

Hi there - I guess this request is a little old....but I love Aetna. I have a $100 deductible and everything is 100% covered. I think it depends on what company you work for. That determines the type of coverage. Aetna is a huge company. As for you Ob-gyn....I'd ask some of your friends. See who is good.

I've had both Aetna HMO and PPO. I loved the HMO plan. The PPO is not that bad, but for me it has been a lot of money out of pocket. You have to meet the deductible then the co-pay and the difference of what they covered. My last pregnancy was quite expensive. Also, prescriptions under the PPO is only a discount not a co-pay. But all in all, they are a pretty good insurance company.

I've had issues with them concerning paying dental and medical benifits....

Make sure that you are in contact with you dentist and your medical to make sure that they are paying the expenses...

It seems that the PPO is better.

My husband and I used to have Aetna, at his previous job. We also had the PPO plan. Be forewarned though to get specifics on doctors in network vs. out of network. And if the kids need a specialist of any kind be sure to get prior approval. My son needed a developmental evaluation and Aetna told us that we didn't need prior approval and then refused to pay the doctor since we did not have written prior approval from them. Even in the PPO plan they can be difficult. For example, there are limitations on the number of child well visits per calendar year that they will pay for. Good luck.

Hi,
my parents have aetnns. it was / is very expensive insurance monthly payments into it plus the co-pays & the $500 deductable on the medical is terrrible. My parents actually just quit aetna to go wih Tricare which is much cheaper covers more & has way smaller deductables.
