Advice to Help Baby Sleep While Teeth Are Coming In

My 4-month-old was a dream sleeper and super happy baby until the last week. He just got his 4-month shots, which could be contributing, but his cries sound like he's in pain and I can feel a tooth just under the gums. He's got all the other signs of teething - drool, chewing, etc. I can help him manage the pain during the day with teething toys but I don't know what to do at night. It's 2am and he's been up fussing for almost 2 hours. This is not at all like him. He had been sleeping all the way through the night (8pm-7am). What can I do until this tooth breaks through?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try the Hyland's tablets and save the Tylenol for the really, really bad nights.

I use baby Orajel for immediate relief, then Tylenol to relieve the pain while he is sleeping. His pediatrician is fine with this and it works like a charm. Good luck!

TYLENOL! Ibuprofen/Motrin after 6 months of age. I also used Orajel, but many peds don't recommend it because it can numb a large area and possibly interfere with swallowing. I always found it fine in my own use, but honestly pretty short acting, so not that great at night. Cold/frozen washclothes, and plenty of teething toys during the day. Often we found that the teething pain only bothered my son at night. He was easily distracted with things to do during the day.

You're right about the shots. He's probably uncomfortable while the meds are working thru his little system. How about a pacifier? Keep his face dr y thru the night so his cheeks don't become irritated and raw. Good luck mommy.

tylenol and teething tablets and orajel will become your friend. Drug him up prior to sleep time, about 30 minutes prior. (don't mix teething tablets and tylenol, do one or the other)

If you are in pain, you want relief, medicines can give that relief.

I feel for you, I know how it is but hang in there , there is a solution.
My son has suffered sooooooo much since the age of 5 months old with teething. Comparing him to my nephew and other friends kids he just was in pain and our ped said some kids you would never know were teething and others felt the pain.
We used natural teething tablets during the day and it did help. At night we used motrin and orajel. My son is now two and will be dealing with more molars as well . I know it helped my son because he welcomed the tablets and at night would not fight us anymore when we would put on the orajel. He would scream in pain for hours and thats now I knew he was in pain and thats why I think he welcomed any kind of meds to help him sleep.

He's old enough that you can give him infant tylenol if he needs it.

Hi T., as a mom with twins and triplets, I gave my kids the approved dose of Tylenol to help with the pain. Usually the pain is just part of the initial stage when teeth are breaking through the gums. Baby should be fine after that. Hope this helps!

Hi T.:

My pediatrican recommends tylenol for teething. I just give it to my son if he wakes up and I know that he is teething. I have only had to give it a few times but it helps both of us sleep.:-)

Best,
A.

Tylenol and Oragel for the gums right before bed. My twins asked for the oragel when they were older and could ask so I know it helps :)

I used teething tablets. They are all natural, and disolve in baby's mouth. I heard about them from a mom who works for a dentist and they worked great! Found them at Walgreens. Hope you get some rest!

I used the natural teething tablets from Walgreens that the first poster mentioned. They are called Hylands Teething tablets. I liked them better, as they didn't numb everything like the Orajel did. Just my opinion... Good luck!

Baby Oragel is good or have you tried putting a teething ring in the freezer for a while and letting him chew on it. Children's Tylenol might help also.
