Advice/support for Hemorrhoids

This is rather embarrassing and something that did not happen to me in my first 2 pregnancies. I am in my 38th week of my 3rd pregnancy and out of nowhere, I have ended up with 2 kidney bean sized hemorrhoids. Prior to them, I was not constipated. My OB told me it was the pressure of the baby at this point. I have followed the advice- laying flat as much as possible and avoiding sitting for long periods; sitz baths; tucks medicated pads; prep H creams; fiber and water. It has been 4 days with little to no improvement.

Anyone ever deal with this embarrassing and uncomfortable situation? When do they go away and how did you cope with it? I am worried they'll get worse and then I'll be in delivery and pushing like crazy and really be in a bad spot. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

My ob/gyn prescribed an ointment for me that gave me a lot of relief--the over the counter stuff didn't help me at all and I had never heard of some of these homeopathic remedies these ladies are posting---where were they when I needed relief? :). The good news is that I didn't even notice them while in labor or pushing, the bad news is that I still have them years later. It could go either way!

Yikes! I got them really bad in the last weeks and for me, unfortunately they did get much worse with the pushing. I felt like that was the worst part of the recovery for me actually! So sorry. Hopefully that won't be the case with you. I don't know if there's anything you can do to prevent this from happening. But for pain relief: That Dermoplast spray they give you in the Hosp. (or you can buy it) works for Hemorroids too. Also, those Tucks pads you mentioned...have you tried folding one up and leaving it in there? You can wear a Kotex pad to keep the mess down, put the Tucks pad right on the pain spot and just leave it in there. That really helped for me. BTW in case you're wondering, after they went away I never got them again. At the time I was worried I would be prone to getting them all the time after that but not the case with me. Best wishes to you for an easy delivery!

I had this problem, but it was different. I didn't get hemoriods until after having the baby (even though I had a c sec). They were mild and went away within a months.

BUT, I had a friend and she had MAJOR issues with hemoriods in her second pregnancy. She got them at 30 weeks, and she did EVERYTHING that you are talking about. She didn't see any improvement either. She went to see a proctologist when she was 37 weeks, but he said that there was nothing he could do until she had the baby. But.......then miraculously they TOTALLY went away when she was 39.5 weeks. The baby moved, and all problems went away. She went thru a vaginal birth.....and even after that....no problems. So....THERE IS HOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get some eggplant from the store. Crush it up to form a paste, put it on where needed and put a pad in your underwear. This really works! I've told pregnant friends about it and they are thankful for the relief.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! First off, I'm so sorry. I know how uncomfortable you can be with "hemmies". I used this with pregnancies #3 & #4. Warning: You might say "yuk". Put a peeled garlic clove that's been a bit crushed (just a little and make sure there are no sharp edges) in the affected area (yup, just puts it right up in there). The garlic seems to help increase the circulation in the affected area. When you have a bowel movement, it comes out. I told you it was different! But it really worked for me. Recenlty after a long car trip I tried a gel-type garlic capsule. It worked well and was much more comfortable. Only took about a day to feel the difference. I warned you! Also, instead of toilet paper, maybe try flushables? Sometimes that helps too! Good luck!

I got a bad one during delivery. So unfortunately, yours may get worse before they get better. When I was in the hospital they gave me an anesthetic spray - can't remember the name - but it definately helped the pain, even though it didn't help it go away faster. I upped my intake of fruit and veggies too- I found that worked better than any fiber supplements. And of course, drank tons of water. Just when I thought it was getting worse, it went away completely. I've been keeping myself regular since and have yet to have a reoccurance, although I hear that you are prone to them once you've had them. It's been over a year for me now. Good luck.

I know what you are going through. I got hemorrhoids so bad during my 3rd pregnancy, I had to have a hemorroidectomy, surgery to remove them at 7 months pregnant. If you are still having no relief, ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist, they can cut them open to get relief. I would not recommend the surgery (hemorrhoidectomy) I had this late in your pregnancy. If you want any further advice/details, you can e-mail me. Ask your doctor about taking hot baths so soak your butt in (you don't have to fill the tub). I know this late in your pregnancy you may not be able to (also it's difficult to get in/out of tub). Laying on your side in the tub takes off some of the pressure, and the hot water helps soothe the pain. Mine was a worse case scenario, I hope at this point you have found some relief.

Hi B.-

I feel for you because they really suck!! I didn't get them until I pushed my second child out, and they were bad!! I don't know if this will help or not but on my first pregnancy she did something to my tailbone and it made siting and walking torture. They recommended when sitting, sitting a donut pillow, which is also used for hemmroids. It takes the pressure off of that area. It did work for me, it took the pressure off the tailbone. I got it at my local drugstore.
Good luck and congratulation!

I feel for you!! This is exactly what happened to me during my first pregnancy, the pressure from the baby made it almost impossible to get any relief. Have you tried pushing them back in? I know that seems rather graphic but that was one of the suggestions the doctor gave me and it did give me a little relief. Another thing that helped was sitting on a "doughnut" , blow up ring we found at the drugstore. They went away for a couple of weeks after delivery, as soon as the pressure was relieved they were not as unbearable. Oh and during delivery I didn't even think about them (once I got over the initial oh my god I don't want my husband to see these things:) ) I wish you the best!!!

The bad news is that they likely won't imporve before the delivery. In my case they didn't get worse from 2 hours of pushing.

I really feel for you Mama! I had them bad too & there's no way to talk about it without being graphic/gross. I actually had to have one drained, talk about embarassing! Lots of good advice already. The fiber definitely helped me have quick BMs so you're not sitting there irritating them any longer than necessary. One tip I didn't see mentioned was after you're done on the potty, push them back in. I know, gross & uncomfortable. They will probably pop back out later in the day but keeping them inside will protect them from chaffing, give you some relief & heal faster. There is also a rectal gel your Dr. can prescribe that is really agressive on hemmies. Good luck - hope you feel better soon!

Hi. I'm sooooo sorry about your unwanted "guests." I had a huge one. My hubby didn't believe I was in as much pain as I was saying until he took a look. It freaked him out and he said he'd never question me again when it came to my pain level. I showed him, huh. Ok now for my advice. Go see your primary care doc and ask him to fix it. Mine did and it felt better instantly. What he did was give me a shot of local anesthetic, cut the thing open and pulled out the blood clots. He even showed them to me. Hemmoroids are actually clusters of blood clots. A lot of times they don't go away even after you have a baby. Pushing WILL make them worse. I still occassionally have "flare-ups" and my son is 3 1/2 yrs old. You need to see the doc quickly because they only have so much time after they appear to perform this procedure. Good luck.

They probably wont go away until post baby-and they'll get worse during delivery. But, from my experience, one you get them-they come back. I got them after my 1st delivery-and, they occaisionally pop up again.

B.,
My heart goes out to you because i was there, except that you are lucky yours are only kidney bean size, I had 2 grapes size ones when I was about 35 weeks pregnant.... Ouch!!! OK, brace yourself.... there is nothing you can do, I tried it ALLl!!!!!! it will take about 7 days before you can feel some relief. I developed them for the first time from pushing my first daughter, I could see them in the mirror growing while I was pushing, it was terribly painful, then like I said, when I was 35 week pregnant with my 2nd, but I did NOT get them again from pushing, but a week after coming home from the hospital a small flair up and I continue to have small flair ups but not as bad as the grape size ones from pregnancy pressure.... Don't let the fear of hemorrhoids interfere with child birth (vaginal), just do what you have to do, they will eventually go away. Good Luck!!

I'm not sure you really want to hear what I have to say. I didn't get them until AFTER I had my daughter. I lost so much blood that I had 4 units of blood transfusion, and had to take iron (constipation here I came). So, after my c-section, I ended up getting them. The thing you can do is eat lots of fiber, take any fiber filled chewable, fiber bars, activia, etc. to keep your stool from hardening. Also, pop two stool softener pills at bed time will help. However, once you get them, they are there, waiting for anytime you push again. So, you want to avoid pushing hard at any cost, even though that's impossible. My daughter is 18 months old and mine still pop out once or twice a week. It only last for a few hours before they pop back in, but they are annoying. I'm pregnant again, and I will have them removed after I deliver my next child (so annoying). I hope this helps...and you are NOT alone!!!!!!!!!
Good luck,
B.

You need to give it more time than just 4 days. Worrying about is only going to make it worse too. You have the doctors orders to RELAX!! Ask for some help from family and friends and take it easy. Keep doing what you are doing, I know from experience that it takes more than four days to make a change.

I did not get hemmorhoids, but I did get a bulging varicose vein on the outside of my vagina during my third pregnancy. I started wearing a pregnancy brace to get some of the pressure off of my lower half and it helped so much! It took away my leg pain, back pain and pain down there. I assume this would also help your problem.

Hi B.,

Not too much fun, huh? Yes, I'm sure that you have developing the hemorrhoids from the pressure of the baby pushing down. Keep up with the doctor's recommendations. I seem to remember that I got some too. Try to keep walking. I think that will not only help with the hemorrhoids, but will also encourage the baby to come. Maybe that's just a superstition, but all my kids came at the beginning of the window period ( well my first born- too early, but that's different). The hemorrhoids will go away- maybe not until after the birth of your baby and your body recovering from the added weight and pressure.
