Hello moms,
I would like to ask you if you could share with me some good tips on how to teach a 6 year old to tie his shoelaces without him feeling too much pressure. I tried to avoid this by buying him shoes without shoelaces but it cannot go like that forever.
Thanks.
N.

Try getting him a book..........they have ones that have laces on them that you can teach him on the book, then transform what he has learned to his shoes........most of all I would say NO PRESSURE!!

Sometimes pressure is okay, you just need to give it in a positive way. When I was a child, I had problems tieing my shoes and every time I thought I had it, they'd fall apart after I took a few steps.

Just do it a step at a time. Do step 1) fold them over and around each other. Praise him for it. 2) do the same thing, but this time with two loops. ...etc.

I could never remember the rabbit story when I was little.

Kids love a challenge they can succeed at. Just break it down in easy enough steps.

When my daughter was younger, she was watching a cartoon called "Little Bill", and little Bill was learning to tie by using his belt from his robe. My daughter then took to practicing tying with the robe belt...it worked for her. There was a little rhyme she would say also but can't remember it. Good Luck!

When I was a kid, it took me forever to learn to tie my shoes - the whole finger in the middle thing threw me off. One of my best friends showed me another way which was easier for me (and I still usually tie my shoes this way!)

-Have your son put his shoes on, untied.
-Have him make an "X" out of his laces by crossing them, then tucking one under and pulling both ends until tight.
-Have your son make two bunny ears (or loops or whatever you want to call them) and then cross the bunny ears in an "X" (just like he did with the straight laces).
-Tuck one bunny ear under the other (just like with the straight laces) and pull until tight.

It will probably take some practice at just doing it, and also at making the bunny ears small enough that once his shoes are tied, the loops aren't huge (a tripping hazard and more likely to become untied).

My friend's mom had taught him this way instead of the traditional finger in the middle thing because the steps pretty much repeat, with the only real difference being whether the laces are straight or looped (bunny ears). Children do learn by repetition....

good luck!

I'll second that tying a belt on a robe suggestion. That's exactly how I finally figured out how to tie --when I was 6, too!

This is gonna sound like a DUH answer, just bear with me. =) Step by step. Put both shoes on him, both untied, you do a step, he does a step. When you are done, start over. Cross over, make a bunny ear, give it a necklace, woops there is a finger caught in it! Give the bunny another ear, pull gently, done! Make it fun, ALWAYS. When he gets tired or frustrated, STOP. These days it doesn't seem to be that big a deal if they don't learn. Be patient. =)
