Advice on Laundering Soiled, Quilted Antique Bear

We have a bed wetter. No worries there.
Unfortunately her antique (read: old and falling apart) quilted bear (made from an old quilt, not fuzzy) got caught in the cross fire. How do I get the poor thing clean?!

My thoughts were to soak it in mild detergent, gently rinse & hope it dries before it rots.

I am open to suggestions. If you have a magic wand, please wave it for me as mine has gone missing. Thanks! P

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your great suggestions!
The poor bear is too delicate for the washer/dryer, even in a pillowcase. So we tried the Hydrogen peroxide/water solution, then rinsed in warm water & press with a towel. It worked! The smell is gone! I have her in the laundry room with the dryer going to get her dry, and I have an in dryer rack I can use if that doesn't work.
Yay - I get to be the hero. Thanks everyone for your help!!

If you wash it with baking soda and a mild detergent it should come right out. My brother wet the bed for a while too and he loved his "blankie" which would always end up under him. This normally did the trick along with letting it air dry partially.
Good luck :-)

The urine is not the problem, it's the bacteria and the smell you need to treat. First spray the bear with a 1:2 dilution of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Just dilute the store bought stuff by 50% in a clean spray bottle. Test a small area for color fastness first. It should be fine but it's good to check. This will destroy odors and bacteria. The spray will soak in through the bear gently without soaking or wringing. Continue to spray as the solution is absorbed until the bear is saturated.

The hydrogen peroxide works fast. As soon as it's fully saturated begin to spray with hot water until the bear is very warm all the way through. It will be drippy to do this on a thick clean towel. Don't hand it up because the weight could damage the fabric. After it's saturated with water roll it up and press it gently in a fresh dry towel. Dry on low in the drier. If you let it air dry it could get moldy. The cotton should be o.k. on low heat and it may even help firm it up. If you have a drier rack to prevent tumbling that would be good too. Don't put it out in the sun, that will fade the fabric fast.

If you want to make some repairs to the bear to help it last longer then go ahead. Don't feel like you have to preserve it's antique value, it's more valuable to your kid than as a collectible. You can use 100% cotton quilting thread or iron the pieces together with some woven iron on adhesive. I've also seen some handmade cotton patches sewn on these bears. You can find 100% cotton antique-like batting at good fabric stores.

I would soak and rinse it in water first then gently pressing what you can out. Then soak it again in some water with detergent and white vinegar, again gently pressing what you can out. Lastly soak in water w/baking soda and then again gently press out the solution then prop it out in the sun to dry.

We have had this issue, too, and I wash it in Woolite on the gentle cycle in a lingerie bag in the washing machine and dry it on low in the dryer.

I would try hand washing it in a mild detergent and then putting it in a pillow case (tie at one end) and into the dryer on a low temp to get it dry. I'd be afraid of letting it dry on its on, I think it would get moldy inside before it actually dries.

Hope you can get bear clean!

I would soak it in a sink with lukewarm water and Woolite and rinse. Then instead of wringing with your hands, roll it in a thick towel and press gently until it is not dripping wet. Then sit in a warm, dry room (like a laundry room with the dryer going). This has worked for my son's "delicate" stuffed animals that have had become subject to body excrement, wear and tear, and/or foodstuffs. Hope this helps!

I'd run it through a mild washload with a load of sweaters or fluffy blankets -- something that's not heavy when wet and could get wrapped around it (like towels or jeans). Purex detergent with Febreeze deodorizer is wonderful stuff for removing odors!

When it goes to spin dry after the rinse cycle, stop the machine a few times and reposition the bear so that it won't be 'warped' to one side or something. Tumble it in a hot dryer with the load of laundry (in a pillow case as someone suggested, maybe) just long enough to get it good and warm and take it out. Either repeat this 'get it hot, take it out' procedure til it dries (instead of tumbling it to death) or lay it in the sun, if possible.

Even if you can just rinse the side that got 'wet' with water and white vinegar (hold it higher than the spray of water so that you only spray the part that got wet) and let the water drain back out of it a couple times (instead of getting it wet through and through), then dry it in the sun, that would help immensely. The sun and wind help deodorize, bleach, AND dry things. Also, if you have a 'Sham-Wow' or some microfiber cloths (like terrycloth), squeeze it with them (much better than terry towels for absorbing liquid!)

I would try to soak it in detergent or a gentle dishwashing liquid and then let air dry. I have heard baking soda can soak up liquids but not sure about urine, I would really need to soak and rinse. I would also suggest that she choose a different animal to sleep with and leave the bear in the corner of the bed or beside the bed in the future so it does not get wet again. Explain that the bear may have to go in the trash if it gets wet too many times. Explain he/she can watch you sleep. You could also call a dry cleaners and ask their advice.

Try putting the bear into a pillowcase, tie the opening closed, and put it in the washer on delicate by itself. My mother did that with mine, and I've done it with my kids. I haven't had a problem with it messing up any of the stuffed animals I've washed. Depending on the critter, I either let it air dry or tumble on low heat. I've been doing that the last few days with cloth books and stuffed toys that belonged to my older children because we had new baby July 30th.

Good luck!!

I would clean it like a mattress. Take a spray bottle with Vinegar in it and spray it down. Let it set for a few mins. then sparkle bake in soda all over it. once it had dried take the vacuum over it! The Bake in soda with change clears because it pulls the pee right out. The vinegar does smell but it is the only thing that will get pee out! Do a search and you will find it all over the place, they say it is like CSI. After I Vacuumed it I would spray it with a little febreeze or Glade fabric refresher. It works every time. I could find anything to get pee out of a mattress, but Sister in law told me about this and that it worked. I tried it and my mattress looks brand new!

they have enzyme cleaners that will deactivate the ammonia and urea. they can be found at pet stores. you could use those to neutralize the acidity and then clean it with a mild very watered down detergent for any staining.

Would it be possible to get another one made? You could buy an old quilt piece and have someone make one. Your idea of soaking sounds like a possibility, not many choices. Dry cleaning?
