Advice on Getting Rid of a Yeast Infections in Toddlers

My daughter (18 months) has had a yeast infection for over three weeks, and we've gone to the pediatrician three times. They have prescribed Nystatin and another yeast infection topical cream, but neither have worked. She also has a sensativity to zinc, so she can't use any creams that contain zinc, which most of the topical creams do. I've also tried giving her probiotics, washing the area with white venegar and water, and taking her to the beach without a diaper, but it still won't go away. I'd love any suggestions or advice on how to treat it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you to everyone who sent a response - it was amazing to hear so many great ideas and past experiences. We tried all the homeopathic routes, probiotics, yogurt, etc..and they weren't working, so we went to the pediatrician who prescribed Diflucan, which is taken orally. It worked after two dosages and she is almost 100% better. If it happens again, we are going to try eliminating all sugar from her diet (she eats very well, but loves fruit so we'll take that out if it reappears). Thanks again!

It could be that she is still eating what is causing the yeast infections. My daughter gets them when she eats too much fruit. The sugar in the fruits causes them. So when she gets them we lay off of all fruits for about a week and use vagisil. Once it's gone we start back on fruits but only ones that don't have a lot of sugar like blackberries, blueberries, rasberries. The other fruits have lots of sugars so we try to limit them. Hope that helps! I'm sorry you are going through this. I know it is painful for both daughter and mother!!! :)

I had a girlfriend that had the same problem and the only thing that worked was to blow dry her privates after her bath and she did not have any more problems after that.

Hi there,

Your daughter is suffering from candidaisis which is an overgrowth of yeast in the body. Her gut or inner ecosystem is completely out of balance. The drugs given to clear up the yeast infection may clear the symptoms for a while but it is likely she will suffer from further infections. A healthy balanced gut has both good and not so good bacteria or flora. When the immune system is weak, when there has been a course or more of antibiotics, or when a child is not eating a wholesome enough diet, the pathogenic and opportunistic flora like Candida take over. Candida feed on sugar so ANYTHING with sugar or that immediately turns to sugar in the bloodstream will continue to feed it. If the yeast becomes systemic this could cause many future health problems.

The good news is she is only 18 months old and it will be so much easier to change her diet than it would be to change an adult or a teenagers. She needs to stay away from bread, grains (this includes pasta) except for (buckwheat, millet, amaranth and quinoa) juice, cookies, sweets even fruit initially as fruit is a natural sugar. She’ll need to eat a diet of healthy, fresh, organic veggies that you can puree and serve with the grains I mentioned above. She also needs a really good probiotic. Go to www.bodyecology.com and order her the cocobiotic or go to www.gapsdiet.com the online store has a baby probiotic. Keep in mind, however that even the best most bioavailable probiotic will be null and void if her diet doesn’t change.

In addition supplement her with a good omega 3 (nordic naturals or carlsons)and use healthy oils like organic, virgin, unrefined coconut oil to cook her food and drizzle organic olive oil on top of her food. Stay away from refined oils and non organic animal products.

I would also encourage you to read both of these books: The Body Ecology Diet by Donna Gates and The Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride. Donna Gates has been treating candidaisis for many years and is the expert in this field. This book will give you EVERYTHING you need to clear this up now and give her a healthy future. Dr. Natasha works with autistic children (most of who suffer from yeast as well) healing their gut and helping them to overcome their autistic characteristics.

Also I wouldn’t let her get any shots for a while as her body may not be at the level it needs for her to detoxify the unhealthy ingredients in the shots.

Feel free to email me and please let me know if you decide to follow the Body Ecology Diet. I am a holistic nutrition student, a nutrition educator, and a certified LEAN coach. I work with parents teaching them how to raise healthier families and I would really love to hear from you and see how your daughter is doing.

i work for a urologist and we always suggest yogart. Yogart helps restore the bodys NATURAL bacteria. Another thing is put 1 cup of white vinegar in her bath water. the "soaking" in the shite vinegar helps better than just washing in the white vinegar. Also, let her have some "air" time. Let her play with no diaper on... (especially after a bath) letting the body air dry working miracles! and as i read from the others.. Diflucan is ALWAYS good. most of the times its just a 1 time dose. ask her ped. or, try the yogart! good luck!!!!

Has your pediatrician checked her blood sugar level? If not have him do so as your daughter may have diabetes and, hopefully not, but if so, sooner diagnosed the sooner you can start to control it to avoid future complications. Good luck.

Try organic creams, may not contain Zinc. Also try Baking Soda in the bath.

Hi J.! My name is L. and I am nurse. I would firt of all go see your doctor and ask for blood work. Sometimes yeast infections are oportunistic infections. If your immune system is low (infection, leukemia, etc.) your white blood cells are fighting off the that infection and the normal flora of your vaginal area does not get the natural bacteria to fight of the yeast infection. Another thing is if your child has higher than normal blood sugars. Yeast on the body is just like yeast for bread- it feeds off of sugar at a high rate. I would get an electrolyte panal drawn and a complete blood count drawn to. Make then culture it to make sure it IS yeast. They can do a skin scraping and do a KOH test to make sure they are sure it is yeast. Good luck!!

It sounds like you are doing a lot of great things! One way many people get 're-infected' while trying to get rid of yearst is from eating too much sugar (sugar creates the perfect growth environment for yeast)....keep her off of high sugar foods such as juices -unless EXTREMELY watered down, sugar cereals, candy, and other 'kiddie' foods that are really just junk. A healthy diet will help fight this as well as keeping her healthy after. Fresh foods rather than packaged foods are best. Sugar is a major immune system depressant as well. CHeck labels, so many kids snacks and foods are rediculously high in sugars and chemicals.

Another thing is be careful about using ANYTHING that you or she may have contaminated with the yeast. Use towels and washcloths only 1X, clothes, handtowels, pajamas, etc -wash them all in HOT after 1 use. Use paper towels around the house instead of cloth and don't use bar soap, liquid only (it can live on the soap). Sanitize anything you handle during/after cleaning her such as the tub, bottle of soap or vinegar, etc...re-infecting is most likely the reason it isn't going away.

Definatley use a good, quality probiotic for toddlers from the health food store. This is something you might consider doing all the time anyway,as well as a good multi-vitamin just to prevent future problems!

If it doesn't clear up soon after all that, I would def ask the Dr for something else, or research it online for alternative toddler treatments. I know someone mentioned this but if you are still breastfeeding her, she will be getting amazing nutritional help and the milk itself can be used to help treat her...

Best wishes to both of you!

Maybe she isn't correctly diagnosed? Rather than yeast may consider a "dermatitis" or some sort of reaction to diapers/heat/detergents/soaps or wipes. Sounds like she may need to be looked at again and given a second thought on what the rash really is.
